Abbott new leader of the Liberal Party

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/12/01/2758261.htm Meanwhile the Labour Party has sore palms from all the high-fiving.

    Age of consent?

Age of consent should be 15. Also, put it in perspective - 16 isn't some universal age. Many countries (namely Europe, Asia and Latin America) have been working with lower age of consent for centuries (in fact, so has Australia, America, and Britain - age of consent is a recent law if I'm not...

Dubai is on the verge of Sovereign Default and Bankruptcy

Agreed. It's amazing how the West has propped it up for so long. Amazing and hypocritical.

    Natural monopolies?

I wouldn't want water, roads, jails, etc owned by private industry.

Since when did our historically moderate, pragmatic Liberal party became the American Republican party? I'd blame Howard, except even he supports the ETS! Hahahaha.

Dubai is on the verge of Sovereign Default and Bankruptcy

I may be drunk, but I don't remember saying that. My knowledge of foreign and/or sovereign debt is limited.

    Australian Politics

If Turnbull is removed as leader, Labour will ditch the Liberal amendments and go with their original scheme. The Coalition will reject it, there will be a DD. It doesn't matter whether this current business is a failure to pass or not. The DD would probably be in July 2010.
  9. S.H.O.D.A.N.

    Australian Politics

Yes and no. A DD would purge the moderates from the Coalition, but not the hard-right deniers. He will lose his seat. The only reason he was elected was because Labour accidentally got him in through their preferences. They weren't very pleased with the result. He'll probably be replaced...

    Australian Politics

Wow. This is actually going to happen. The Coalition is batshit insane. What is happening? We'll see a Senate with something like 10+ Greens, Greens holding the balance of power by themselves, and plenty of Greens House of Reps seats for the first time in history (I'd say 3 to 7). Labour will...

Calls to lift legal drinking age to 19

The Federal government has quite definitely ruled out raising the drinking age, so I wouldn't worry.

Taking the King's shilling (welfare and regulation)

There is nothing inherently wrong with government regulation any more than there is having salt in one's diet, so to anybody not a big L libertarian, this is a moot point with an obvious answer.

    Snow Leopard

The EULA is NOT a legal document. The vast majority are untested in court and most would not be upheld. They are merely a scare tactic.

    is freedom universal or relative?

Similarly in the middle ages, there was no universal welfare, healthcare, education.

    Where do you stand?

Re: BOS political compass scatterplot Economic Left/Right: -5.75 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.59 (Edit: Frankly I don't believe the economic result. I'm essentially a capitalist. Yes, I believe strongly in economic regulation, but usually light regulation, as is largely the case in...

    is freedom universal or relative?

A claim universally acknowledged by Libertarians and laughed at by the vast majority of the rest of society. ;)

The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

Thanks for your bitter reply. Did you know these are forums for free discussion of political and philosophical issues and that reiterating another person's points is not only valued, but encouraged? Perhaps you'd like to limit the freedoms people have on here to express their opinions about...

The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed

No, nothing's wrong with our gun restriction laws now. You can still own a gun if you prove your ability to handle one safely anyway. Guns are largely horrible little devices which we're all better off without (though they're fun at a shooting range, that really is where their good points...
