I don't think they make that many mistakes when marking
You're mark won't go down if it's lower though.

I got 65 in Trials for Business and beat my friend by about 15 marks (Hard marking; 65 was a top 10-12 mark)
Then for HSC I studied for 3 weeks for business and she studied for 3 days

Most of the time it is because
1. Schools set hard trials to scare students
2. Teachers mark hard to scare students
3. People generally study more for HSC
