Should take a novice a couple of hours if they're switched on mentally. Takes me 45 minutes without complications - but there's ALWAYS complications. Refer to the link I previously posted above. It has step-by-step instructions and explanations for an entire re-format and re-install of an OS.

Bear in mind that reformatting is a last resort. You must have an OS CD to reformat (you need to reinstall the operating system [Vista]) and *I don't think the Vista CD's were given to PC owners? *Meaning you have no operating system to install after the reformat. You also need the software...

Give this a go. If it doesn't help and it's an OS based virus (sounds like it), turn the PC off and leave it off until you can fix it.

If you want to take this path, bear in mind that you'll lose everything on the HDD (music, photos, assignments etc.). Also, it is simple to do but it's not really something I would recommend a novice do...
