Heya! Good to hear you're interested in reading some philosophy! Imo its one of the best things ever - really opens our eyes to the fundamentals of how we think and how the world works - plus you can really weave in alot of philosophy into your English essays! Just off the top of my head based...

Philosophy is absolutely amazing, one of the best things I've ever done. It really is the basis of so much of humanities, and you're right ethics and politics are completely founded on philosophical debates. I studied Justice - looking at Libertarianism, and the welfare state for example. Ethics...

OMG - SQUEE! Your subjects and interests mirror mine so much!!! Chinese studies FTW! I'm really attracted to Yale for that reason - they have an AMAZING East Asian Studies department. Economics, english, history, philosphy - ahhh! Music to my ears! I'm absolutely the same, a strong humanities...

Yes sure! See the degree I get in America is a general liberal arts degree. Their uni system is different in that there is a very clear delineation between their undergraduate and graduate degrees. That's why at Harvard for example - as an Undergrad student, I can only get a BA or a BS (Bachelor...

Love Tim Winton. David Malouf is fantastic as well. Jacob - isn't it awesome all this reading for pleasure we're now able to do?

Who here has gotten 99+ without accelerating?

Not that many schools accelerate. Three out of the five 99.95s at my school had no acceleration. Not accelerating isn't a disadvantage at all. Much less a "big disadvantage".

    song for related text

I second what Aerath said. You DO need to be analysing the musical components of the song, and NOT just the lyrics. Otherwise you may as well be analysing a poem. This is what my english teacher - top HSC marker with 40+ years experience said to me. This is also why she strongly suggested...

If I enjoy works by Bryce Courtenay, who else's work might I like?

I would reccommmend Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist is a good start. He and Courtenay share the same sense of human emotion and drama. Perhaps also Gabriel Garcia Marquez, but he's not really light reading, however he has that Courtenay-esq sense of sweeping history and family sagas as well. -...
