Sums and Differences of Areas (Integration)

So I have the question; Find the exact area enclosed between the curve y= sqrt (4-x^2) and the line x-y+2=0 At the moment, I know I can integrate it using integration by substitution and trig identities, along with inverse sin. Is there a faster or simpler way to integrate it? Thanks

How to convert decimals to fractions ?

    This is another way to do it. Proof; Let x = 0.2297297297297.. (1) 10x = 2.297297297297 (2) (2-1) 9x = 153/74 x= 153/74 / 9 x= 153/74 * 1/9 x= 17/74 Proven

Maths Ext 1 Preliminary Exam 2014

Here is another couple of very difficult proofs, that typically won't be asked in 3U, but if you can do these, than you will be in good stead! Prove by mathematical induction: (1+sqrt 5)^n-(1-sqrt 5)^n all divided by sqrt 5 2^n Also bernoulli's inequality induction is a very good question...

Maths Ext 1 Preliminary Exam 2014

Yes, we weren't going to even learn induction in prelim, until I looked at the mapping grid and one of the questions had induction, so we had to learn the concept a couple of days before the exam. We only have 4 days of Maths Ext 1 in the two week cycle. How about the rest of you? Do I have...

Maths Ext 1 Preliminary Exam 2014

The question said a/x-2 + b/x-3 , so you had to find the values of a and b. With the polynomial, did you look for another root, to get it to simultaneous equations, solve for m and n, used one of the roots using factor theorem to find the remaining roots?

Maths Ext 1 Preliminary Exam 2014

I know how to derive the ellipse equation, but what I don't understand is, that you can unexplicitly be taught of an ellipse in a 3U subject. I knew it was an ellipse straight away, but I thought I would be wrong, as it is a 3U course not 4U, so I thought my teacher would go what an idiot.

Maths Ext 1 Preliminary Exam 2014

what would have been the solution by the way if it was asking for the cartesian?

Maths Ext 1 Preliminary Exam 2014

That is exactly what I thought it was, an ellipse. I'm sure it said it wanted to find the parametric equation. I did Conics last year in Maths C in QLD, but I thought it can't be in a 3U subject. I might have read it wrong, maybe it was asking for the cartesian, given the parametric.

Maths Ext 1 Preliminary Exam 2014

Exam was kept within the examination room, otherwise I would have posted it. It was an independent paper though. Another question in the multiple choice was; given the cartesian equation of: x= a cos theta, y=b sin theta Find the parametric equation. I thought of x=2at, and y= at^2, but I wasn't...

Maths Ext 1 Preliminary Exam 2014

I can give you an example of a couple of the questions. One was p(x) = mx^4 + nx^3 + 12x^2-22x-12. and had a double root at x=1 Find the values of m and n and then factor it as its products. Another one was: 2x+3/x^2-5x+6 , find the value of a/x-2 and b/x-3 There was also a very good induction...

Maths Ext 1 Preliminary Exam 2014

Hi, I did the Ext 1 paper today for Prelim, and wow I found it very difficult along with the four other people in my class. We had been given a couple of past papers in previous years from Western Mathematics for 2013 and 2011 and this one was no where close to this one. Three quarters of...

Why do alkanols have higher boiling points than their corresponding alkanes?

This is my response, hopefully it answers your question. 1) Why do alkane and alcohols have different boiling points for the same numbers of carbons. Alkanes have a different boiling points compared to alcohols due to the alkanes not being associated with Hydrogen bonding. The alkanes are made...

    Maths Ext 1- Polynomials 1 Prelim 2014

Another way to do part C is using: [tex]a^3+b^3=(a+b)(a^2-ab+b^2) Ok, I did think of that, but I don't know what (a^2 -ab + b^2) is equal to? as we know (a+b) = 5 (-b/a)

    Maths Ext 1- Polynomials 1 Prelim 2014

    I solved b) and c) and they weren't the same as yours Let Alpha= A and B= Beta B) a^2+b^2 = (a+b)^2 - 2ab = 5^2 - 2 * -5 = 25+10 = 35 c) (A + B)^3 = (A+B)^3 - 3ab (a+b) = 5^3 - 3 * -5 * 5 = 125+ 75 =200 I also checked the back of the book to verify the soln answer's and they were correct.

    Maths Ext 1- Polynomials 1 Prelim 2014

Hey guys and girls, Currently doing Maths Ext 1 Prelim course. Have an exam this week, and have a feeling on the polynomials, I will be assessed on the quartic equation. Here is the question, I am having an issue on finding alpha beta gamma in part c of the question, as I don't believe...

When making notes based on syllabus...

Anything your lab manuals is assessable, so don't leave it just to the syllabus dot points, although they are important. Just review prac's that you have done, as I guarantee it will be in your examinations.
