Lowest target ATAR to get into postgrad medicine?

Since you haven't got your ATAR yet, I'm guessing you haven't done your HSC yet. In that case why aim for postgraduate med? In your position it would be much better to aim for undergraduate or provisional med. And you don't need to do a science related undergraduate degree, it can be from any...

Q&A Thread - studying medicine and being a doctor

Hi there! My questions are kinda far into the future but I'm just curious. How stressful was your intern year, and how many hours in average would you work per week? Also, how competitive was it to get into your registrar position, and do you mind sharing what specialty you're working in (you...

    University of Sydney Medicine undergraduate

There's actually a lot of benefit to getting into this pathway, I think your downplaying provisional medicine quite a bit. Provisional entry places are just as valid as undergraduate places, in that you can get into medicine straight after high school, it's just that you start medicine at...

    University of Sydney Medicine undergraduate

The course only has 30 places. NSW alone has 48 people who get 99.95, so counting people from all over Australia, there's way more than enough students to fill the course.

    Requirement for Medicine

yea check mso for all the collated data. In short though, there's no specific required atar or ucat score since each uni has a different criteria, so just aim as high as you can, although for rural students the requirements would be lower. As for extracurricular stuff, doing these don't...

Anyone doing medicine in uni rn?🧐

eh unimelb was actually known for the opposite. It has 2.5 clinical years out of 4, which is much more than the 2 years other unis get. This was the main reason a lot of graduates preferenced unimelb first

Anyone doing medicine in uni rn?🧐

Those rankings are mostly based on research output, which isn't really relevant to the quality of teaching at the uni. All unis in Australia are AMC accredited, and the uni you went to has no bearing on what you do later in medicine. And as said before, most people are lucky to even get a single...

    double major or major/minor?

Hi there! I'm in a similar position to you, I'll be doing the Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Medicine. You shouldn't worry about being a more "desirable" graduate for having two majors since you ultimately want to become a dentist, and nobody will really care about what you did doing...

    Medicine: UNSW vs WSU

Congrats on the offer! As always, you should accept the offer (but don't enrol yet), then wait until the 8th of January to see if you can choose. I can also help you with the courses themselves. Prestige has zero practical value in medicine, since all courses are AMC accredited and you will be a...

    Reaction Pathways HELP

For the first question, starting from but-1-ene, I think you add hydrogen (hydrogenation reaction) with a metal catalyst and heat to produce butane. Then add the chlorine under UV light (substitution reaction) to produce 1-chlorobutane. Subsequently, react the 1-chlorobutane with sodium...

How should I arrange my UAC preferences for UWS med and UNSW med?

Not sure how WSU will let you know before Christmas, since offers for both unis come out on January 8th. Maybe you are rural? If that is the case, it doesn't matter whether you put UNSW above WSU or not since UNSW wouldn't be participating in that offer round, and so UAC would skip over UNSW and...

    Medicine 😎

WSU interviews finished last week already. UNSW invites will come out after ATARs are released.

    Should I do Medicine??

Most of this isn't true. Unpredictable hours don't apply to every career. Let's take dentistry for example. The degree is the same length as medicine, but there's no internship involved and no residency, straight into private practice earning money with predictable work hours. With medicine, you...

    Should I do Medicine??

The answer isn't that simple, and a lot of those are myths. You do have the potential for money and stability, but that comes much later. For the next 15-20 years, if you decide to do medicine, you'll be working unpredictable hours, moving all over the country, and earning a small income whilst...

What HSC subjects do future doctors choose in Australia?

No, the subjects you do don't really matter, and unis won't look at them. Just do the subjects you enjoy or are good at so that you can maximise your ATAR. Although chemistry is a prerequisite for some unis, so if you enjoy that then you should definitely do it :)
