    Summer clerkships 2009/2010

If I was 100% sure about doing tax I would go to an accounting firm. But because I'm not sure about tax, I definitely want a clerkship so I get the rotations and then (hopefully) have a better idea about what I want to do. The partner I spoke to at Corrs basically said that if I'm not sure I...

Congrats! I got KPMG for tax. And then today I got an offer for tax at Deloitte. I decided to withdraw my applications from EY & PwC because the assessment centre days are clashing with exams and work and now that I have something to fall back on I want to focus on my Corrs & Minters interviews.

Corrs have another one tonight, not sure about Cltuz. I liked Corrs because it gave us a chance to sit and relax and chat to some of their people rather than engage in forced mingling.

I went to Minters for an hour then to Corrs. Minters seemed pretty standard but Corrs surprised me...nice and relaxed and they cracked open the veuve which pretty much had me sold. It finished up at about 10 but quite a few people hung back until 11 drinking the last few bottles. All the grads...

No, nothing like that. They ask some behavioural questions about teamwork, communication, analytical skills etc. The partner did ask me to elaborate on why I like tax & asked me to identify some of my strengths that lend themselves to being successful in tax. I think the main thing is to always...

    1. Presentation by HR & various partners (1hr) 2. Morning tea 3. Interview with manager (45mins) 4. Written assessment (30mins) 5. Interview with partner (45mins) 6. Lunch 3-5 are kind of like a round robin so some people go and do interviews while others are doing their written assessment. The...

So far I've only had KPMG and the group thing for Deloitte. I've got EY on Thursday though. 9am-3:30pm seems slightly excessive. How did they structure the day & what's the assessment like?

I applied to tax. The written thing isn't hard but you need to manage your time & make sure you read all the material. There was crucial info on the back page and some people missed it. The task I had requires you to fill in for your sick boss & email a proposal to a potential client...

Is anyone tossing up between laws firm & accounting firms? I have some big4 interviews scheduled already (so far only 1 clerkship interview) and they make their offers during September. I think acceptance has to be made well before 9th October when law firms make their offers.

I got rejected by Mallesons too. So far I'm 1 from 6.

    Summer clerkships 2009/2010

I think it's going to be hard for me to get an interview for a top tier. At uni it's the same bunch of students getting interviews for everything so I think my best chance is with the mid tiers because heaps of the top students only applied to top tiers and it leaves the door open for the rest...

    Summer clerkships 2009/2010

PwC Legal used to offer clerkships but this year they are just accepting law students as part of their normal vacation work. I think most firms place law students in tax but I'm not entirely sure. I think most applications close at the end of this week but they progressively cull people. PwC...

I reckon it's a good idea to cover your bases. The accounting firms are my back up plan.

I'm trying to resist the temptation to freak out. Although there are some people that might score heaps of interviews, most people I've spoken to that have done it before got 3 or 4. Every firm is different - different criteria, different 'values', different culture. Or at least that's what I'm...
