b) How do you rate the importance of entertainment stories?5
c) How do you rate the importance of human interest stories?6
d) How do you rate the importance of political stories?8
e) How do you rate the importance of world news stories?9
f) How do you rate the importance of crime stories?8

6. a) What type of stories do you believe deserve to be the front page news stories? Split - World new & local issues that impact on the individual_

b) Why?
_I think its important to have balance. While it is important to have issues affecting people globally it is also important to let people know what is going on in their own community
7. Do you believe the news stories that get most coverage are an adequate representation of what you care about?(explain)No - I think that many issues are underplayed. Issues in other smaller countries where thousands die are put in a tiny little column while a speed camera not working is front page new. i think this is wrong that we are so focused on ourselves and what annoys us everyday instead of the immense suffering going on in other places that is so much worse than anything we will ever see or go through

8. a) What influence do you think the media has on what IS important to you?I refuse to be influenced - what I see as important is not influenced by the media in any way although they may bring my attention to issues I was unaware of

b) Why do you think this would be the case?
N/A
9. a) What influence do you think the media has on what IS important to society? _I think by portraying issues such as Shane Warne reuniting with his wife instead of highlighting the issues such as thousands dying of no food at all they promote an individualistic and selfish attitude and one that is obsessed with celebrity in many cases.

b) Why do you think this would be the case? By constantly pushing this in our faces and telling it that is 'a travesty', 'worst ever', 'unjust' we start believing it especially as blaming others for the problems that are generally of our own causing is part of human nature. In the cases of the enormous publicity celebrities get I believe that people want to read it because of two reasons: 1. it provides an escape of sorts from their own lives and 2. they feel better about themselves when they read about how pathetic the celebrities are____________________________________________________________

10. How do you feel about the influence media has on society?I feel it should focus more on the real issues and shouldn't pander to the crowds by telling us about stupid, insignificant things. It has a great opportunity to broadcast much about the world to people and I hate it when it abuses this position by glossing over important issues and highlighting unimportant ones

Where Does Empathy Lie?
1. Age: __17___________
2. Sex: Male Female

3. Cultural background: ___aussie/british/scottish________________________

4. Were you born in Australia? Yes No

5. If you could solve one issue which directly affects you, or will directly affect you in the near future, which would it be? The drought

6. Why do you think some people may give up on trying to solve global issues such as global warming, poverty, etc?
As soon as part of the issue is solved another part pops up or another wholem issue arises. This causes many to see the attempt to solve these problems as futile and a waste of time. Some just feel 'que sera sera' (whatever will be, will be) and others when they don't see an immediate solution also feel their work is useless

7. Would you say that you are mainly focused on the daily events in your life as opposed to global issues which have been occurring for many years? Why do you think this may be the case?
Unfortunately I think I am. I try and focus on these more global issues, and have been more of late, but I believe primarily because of our selfish nature we become consumed with our little world and the problems within it___________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________

8. Name three global issues you feel most affected by. How do they make you feel?
Global warming - This frankly scares the hell out of me and I worry when I see that the problem is just getting worse
Poverty - I hate seeing people go hungry and without a home and am angered when I see firework diplays costing billions when that money could be used to totally lift a country out of debt
War - Civilians being killed in war upsets me. I sometimes am angered when the politicians are so blind and aren't brave enough to admit they have made a mistake

9. As a result of these feelings, do they cause you to watch the news and read the newspapers more often? Please tick one of the boxes.

Definately

10. Do you think Australia could do more to help resolve global issues? Please tick one of the boxes.

Yes No

Good luck and have a great day

The media has a huge influence on issues that are important to me and this scares me eg. consertive sources skew public opinion about the political situation, environment etc.

6. Because they are too lazy to do anything about it to help, and they don’t feel that the affects of it will show in their lifetime. Also people only feel as though they have time for themselves. As long as they are not directly affected by it- that’s all they think matters
7.Yes, because everyone is so wrapped up in their own lives they forget to look at the bigger picture
8. Whaling, pollution, and anything to do with animal cruelty. The animal cruelty especially makes me feel very frustrated and sad. People treat animals so badly, and they hurt these poor creatures in so many unforgivable ways. I feel so sorry for these animals because human are just ruining their planet and they are unable to stand up for themselves, they are so vulnerable, and human take advantage of their vulnerability
