Standard deviation is a measure of the 'spread' of the distribution. A larger value means that the marks were more spread out, and a smaller value means they were clumped around the mean.

Schools have access to the band percentiles and means for the courses which were studied at their school - in this particular year, those were the only courses studied at my ex-school, and so I don't have data for any others.

I used the band percentiles for 2002 to estimate my UAI using lazseeker advanced and only ended up with a UAI of 98.8. Yet when I put my marks into it without percentiles I got 99.5

Huge difference I reckon.

I suspect the 'normal' version of LazSeeker is unnecessarily inflating UAIs by around 5 points.

The advanced version using percentiles should be much more accurate.

Yeah ppl must use the advanced version to minimise disappointment

using the normal Lazseeker I get 96.40, using the 2002 percentiles, I get roughly 94.55

HELP ME QUICKLY!

Can someone explain to me how to use the Advanced version of Lazseeker using percentiles, not marks.

I printed out the 2002 Band Percentiles and State Exam means but dunno how to use it.

Can someone show me an example?

hey laz, if the SD is relatively large, is that a bad thing?

on the other hand, if the SD is low, 4 eg in studies of religion 1unit, does this kinda mean that scaling will be higher?

sum1 once tried 2 explain SD's with me n how it may affect scaling but with a short attention span i absorbed very little...u wanna give it a go laz?

The standard deviation is a measure of the 'spread' of the distribution of marks. Small SDs mean the marks were clumped around the mean, and larger SDs mean the marks were more spread out.

Generally, courses with both a high mean and a small SD will be scaled better than courses with other mean/SD combinations - there are, of course, many other factors that come into play, however.

Why is there such a large sd for chem? cause so many ppl were confident of doing well so I thought most ppl would be grouped together near the top or something.

If you use percentiles to calculate your UAI this year (via lazseeker) it isn't entirely accurate because this year there are more students doing the HSC so more people will get 99+ and over 90 than was the case with the HSC in 2001 which lazseeker is based on.

They must have had english markers as well at the chem exam, who picked on the grammar of students' answers. That explains everything.
