For a 3-4 minute speech how many words would you generally write? Any ideas?

It varies. Just open a wikipedia page and read it for 4 minutes and do a word count.

500 words does me. however, i look up and pause to emphasize points etc. so if your positive that you can do that, then 1 pg is fine.

500 words.

I don't understand the rationale of 3-4 minute speeches. Some schools do it, but a speech around the 7-10 minute mark seems ideal to me IMO. More time to flesh out your ideas.

It really depends. But I would say about 400-600 words. The top guy in our year had about 600 words but he had music during his speech (30 seconds). That guy was extremely awesome - probably the best speech that anyone ever heard.

Just realised that the speech was 5 minutes in length.

5 minute speech should be about 800 words.

He had about 650 words and he had 30 seconds music in it.

His speech > others' speech (including mine).

He had the music in his iPod and used some kind of sound amplifier. The speech was about 1997 film Romeo & Juliet. He was to become a director of the film and talk about the adaptations in the film he made in regards to the real play. It was brilliant. He had the music of Romeo & Juliet for 30 seconds and he went on. The preparation he had was absolutely astronomical. Genius speaker & writer at the same time. :)
