Ok, heres my dilemma. I'm currently enrolled in

COMP2121
COMP2041
MATH1081
MATH2130
MATH2601

I'd really like to do a MATH3xxx but i dont want to remove any of the above subjects as they're all core and i'd rather get them out of the way. Is doing 33 uoc way too hard or should I give it a try? For the record, i did 27uoc last semester with relative ease, and i've done 5 subjects every semester since ive been at uni without trouble.

Thanks for any suggestions.

MATH2130 is 6uoc of work.

Just do MATH2520/2620 since its required for a Maths major.

Also, all the good math3xxx subjects in session 2 usually require prereqs from semester 1 or second yr.

why not comp3120?

eh to be honest i dont really like computing subjects that much, not to the extent of doing 3 of them at once. I was really looking at MATH3701 - Higher Topology and Differential Geometry.

It would be a good idea to do higher linear algebra before taking on that.

Steele teaches both, and he emphasises on the algebra stuff which is useful for differential geometry, eg vector spaces, tensors, etc

Hmm yeah didnt notice that pre-requisite. Also, do you have any idea what the Mathematics Project is like §eraphim? I was thinking of possibly doing the 3 or 6uoc one during summer.

According to my friend, the maths project is basically a reading course in areas not covered at UNSW. I think the end result is a polished set of lecture notes (this is for pure mathematics).

You should approach Ian Doust if you want to do more maths subjects. There are AMSI Honours courses you can take over the Summer, as well as cross-institutional courses with USyd.

Also bear in mind some of the more specialised/less popular pure maths subjects run on a 2-yr cycle. eg combinatorics

It would be wise just to do all the core subjects including complex analysis before you think about doing anything more advanced.

Yeah i know about math2130, especially with the lecturer. We had him for the applied part of math2111 last semester and if he's the same for 2130, it's going to have to be a self taught subject. And yeah i've looked through the math1081, i seem to have covered the majority of it, which I guess is good because a lot of the lectures have clashes.

Well if Maths will enrol you into 33UOC, be my guest. But the science faculty will not let you go over 30UOC. Period.

Really? I was going to do it last semester, they told me to write a letter saying i take full responsibility if anything happens, sign it and it's all good. But yeah i think maths would let me, a simple phone call has resulted in letting me enrol in subjects that have clashes all over my timetable. They dont even check what the problem is :/

Also my primary degree is comp sci, i recall reading in their policy that if you've done 27 in a semester you can do 30, then after 30 you can do 33 and so on.

That may be the case.

What I was referring to was, that if you wanted the main Science Student Admin to enrol you, you won't get over 30UOC, regardless of your transcript. But if maths/comp will do it for you, that's another story.

COMP2041 hardly anything you would worry about. It's dead easy and the only thing you have to worry about is the assignments which are not hard.
Since John Plaice is taking S2, his just going to rehash from previous sessions so all the solutions are online :)
Also if you take it this session there is a possiblity that I'll be your tutor :p

COMP2121, Sri is a great lecturer and he doesn't set difficult exams. You just have to pay attention in lectures and do the work. His also very funny, likes people to participate in his lectures.

MATH1081, for a maths major this course is a walk in the park.

After you sent your email to Trenerry, how long did it take for him to enrol you in the course? Because a lecturer changed the class timetable for one of my subjects, I am changing to a new maths subjects but its full so I can't do it on myUNSW.

I didnt email him, i just called the general maths enquiry line, told them i have a timetable problem and spoke to some lady who did it without even questioning me.
