I recently posted about 4U and I've decided to keep it for now, but now there's another problem. I'm only a few lessons in and I'm already overloaded with hw (3U and 4U).

I'm a bit slow because I don't go to tutoring, but I'm spending hours after each lesson figuring out the content and doing the hw. Now since I'm still considering dropping to 3U I can't neglect adv hw, but I also feel like if I'm going to spend time trying 4U I need to put in the required effort. How much time should I be spending on 4U? Will the workload only get worse? Any advice is appreciated.

depends how clever u r. some ppl dont study at all and just do a couple past papers before exams and they ace it. others study 3 hours a day and still fail. all depends on u. in general probs expect 1.5 hours per day consistent work if ur the average person?

pretty sure you'd be slower if you go to tutoring. Why would tutoring make you any faster?

learn the content in advance so you're essentially learning the course twice. Might not make you faster but will def make u understand the content better, and obv do better in tests cuz a lot of schools arent gonna fully cover every piece of content in max depth

Most of my peers have already learned the content before so they can whiz through the exercises, but I've got to learn everything on the spot which slows me down. Of course, tutoring means more homework overall though.

what topic are you doing right now? if you're doing proofs first, that's probably the most time consuming topic in 4u, so you should expect for it to be difficult. complex numbers can also be a bit time consuming as there's a lot of different questions they can ask you, but mechanics, integration and vectors are generally require a bit less time, mainly because they're continuing off of 3u content.

also, 4u is one of those subjects where it will be very difficult at the beginning but should get easier as time goes on. at my school, the first assessment had top mark of ~55%, by the time it got to trials it was around 80% (from memory). it can take a bit to get used to the difficulty and type of questions they ask

generally most schools start with complex number cuz u can easily tell if ur built for 4u or not. if ur able to wrap ur head around complex numbers and think in this completely new different way with argand diagrams, mods and roots of unities youd be doing pretty well. if u cant and ur results r horrible, maybe think abt dropping

E4 in 4u is equivalent to 100 in adv in terms of contribution i heard somewhere, not sure if its legit or not but it gives u an idea that u dont need to do extraordinarily well in 4u to beat whatever mark u get in adv

you should be fine if you consistently study, if you're worried then maybe get ahead over the holidays a bit. also, 4u isn't a subject where you need to be getting 90 raw for a band 6, 65+ has ridiculous scaling and is about equivalent to a high mark for advanced, with a bit more effort. additionally, if you're planning on doing anything with math in uni, 4u will be a big help as you won't be as overwhelmed with the higher pace (it is a big advantage over coming from an advanced background, but after a semester of uni you'll probably be on the same level)

Yess that is quite true, but I feel like most uni subjects only need adv or ext 1 maths??
I should also mention my other problem, which is that I have 12 units (including 4U) and I'm not really planning on dropping any of them, so 4U just seems like extra effort sometimes.

yea you can get away with doing adv or ext 1 only. but it will be easier to start uni maths with a 4u background, compared to only having adv/ext1, since there will be topics on things like complex numbers and integration methods in introductory courses that are also in 4u. it's not the craziest advantage ever but it is helpful at least at the beginning
