i'm enjoying my maths and im looking to do 4u next year. i heard that when you do do 4u. your ext1 counts as 2units.. and your ext2 counts as 2units. im wondering how does that work? and do you get the great scaling as well.. on the units?

When you choose MX2, you will no longer effectively do the Mathematics 2U course... (you will learn the stuff, but not the exams or assessments).

You will have 2units of MX2 and 2units of MX1 (magic? hehe...).

Maths Extensions not only scale wonderfully, they align disgustingly awesome! ^_^. I hope you enjoy MX2 next year.

I thought scaling and aligning were the same...

Nay, they are completely different processes.
Aligning is the Board of Studies setting the band cutoffs. This is not a relative measure. It is technically possible for everyone to get a band 6.
Scaling is the UAC's method of ranking. This is relative to your cohort.

One does NOT affect the other. They're both determined from your raw external mark and your moderated internal mark.

Nope... totally different processes.

Aligning is what happens to your raw mark on the exam paper... the Board of Studies does all this with relative stuff and putting you into your respective bands. Scaling is done by UAC and basically nothing scales UP, except for MX2 and freaky languages, like Classical Greek Extension and the odd few courses with tiny cohorts.

In summation:

Scaling is for your atar and only done by UAC

Moderation/Aligning is by BoS and if for your HSC marks and results you get on your certificate.

P.S. Maths Extension two is aligned insanely well... like if you saw a few examples (if you havn't before) your mouth will hit the ground. AND it scales up for your atar (as long as your not like the very bottom of the state). This is why you'll see a lot of the people getting very high atars doing MX2 (it makes life easier in terms of getting an awesome atar).

Close. Aligning isn't relative. The band cutoffs are decided before the papers are marked.

Usually on your extension units you get a mark out of 50. When you do 4U Maths, your MX2 is multiplied by 2 to get a total out of 100. MX1 is similarly doubled. As a result, you end up with 4 units of lovely marks.

The scaling is only for the individual units of the extension courses, so you can't get MX2 scaling for all 4 units.

Lol of course not, but you do get MX2 scaling for 2 units and MX1 scaling for another 2 units.
Which equates to 4 units of the best scaling non-language subjects..
