"Increased understanding of electromagnetic spectrum and radioactivity has been important in the development of sophisticated medical technologies used to analyse body structure and processes. Assess the impact of these technologies on society." (7M)

Anybody have suggestions for answering this question?

since its EMR and radioactivity, you should be talking about X-rays/CT scans, PET/bone scans and endoscopes - possibly two points on each followed by an overall assessment.

X-rays and CT scans
- An understanding that they can be readily manufactured in a modified cathode ray tube (through decelerating electrons or electrons bombarding a target anode) allows them to be used in medical diagnosis
- An understanding that X-rays are attenuated by body tissues based on tissue density and that they expose photographic film - this has enabled greyscale images of the body to be produced which is good for investigating bone pathologies such as fractures and tumours. CT scans shows high resolution structural detail of many body organs which allows for accurate and early diagnosis of diseases - contribtes to better health of society
- X-rays used in chest screening of immigrants for lung diseases - this has reduced incidence of Tuberculosis in Australia

Endoscopes
- Understanding of the critical angle and how total internal reflection works in optical fibres allows visible light to be used to produce real time, coloured images of the body
- This can be used to perform minimally invasive key hole surgeries which reduce medical costs on society and lower post-operative pain for individuals

PET scans
- Understanding that radionuclides can be tagged onto biomolecules to concentrate around a target organ; this allows functional data from the body to be obtained
- PET scans can evaluate the spread of cancer ; assists doctors in determining the most effective treatment - leads to better social health
- However the exposure of body cells to ionising radiation can increase the risk of genetic mutations

Overall assessment : .blah blah blha

Thanks for that! Yeah and you can also talk about MRI. The use of radio waves even though it should be pulses of radio frequency.
