Your ATAR never expires and most people make their switch just after first year. Especially if you want to move unis, reapplying with your ATAR through UAC is very common. But I was moreso talking about if you change your career goals halfway through year 12.
fair enough but after more than 2 years doesn't it become more or less useless and not that much of a factor for reapplying as your gpa? maybe works in your first year of uni as well but i have heard of many instances where they either pick whichever one is better out of your gpa and your atar or they use your gpa only as a measure of success within uni. idk too much abt this tho you could prob correct me

I completely disagree on some of these:

As for your dismissal of the imposter syndrome point, I am not suggesting that one boast about their ATAR to others, that is antisocial behaviour and weird. It is however a reflection of you being able to put it some hard work and study, and certainly gives an example of accomplishment that you can look back on. A lot of my friends have struggled adjusting to uni because they don't feel like they belong in the course, that they only got in through early entry or bonus points and that they are not smart enough. Obviously do not build your self esteem on an ATAR, but theres nothing wrong in personally feeling happy about your achievements, and it definitely makes you feel more deserving of your university admission.

As for the parents thing, maybe this is cultural. My marks definitely gave my Dad more joy than they gave me and I like seeing him happy.
ATAR expires after 5 years or once you've completed an undergraduate degree.
I agree with the parents thing. Coming from an Asian family + having asian surroundings, 90+ atar was like the average. It's like paying them back for 12+ years of education and rewarding them of their efforts. I'll never forget my parents bear hugging me till the point I could barely breath lmao.

fyi, you (usually with some exceptions) need to get at least 3 band 5s/e3s in hsc to study undergraduate math teaching in nsw. that means, even if the atar requirement is techincally 60/70, you will usually need to get higher than that

i rlly hope for a 90+ ATAR (idc if its a low 90 as long as its 90) but i wanna do math teaching n the ATAR requirement is 60+

this kinda demotivates me like "why am i studying so hard n stressing just to end up doing a 60+ ATAR course?"

for those who aim to get high ATARs but their course has low ATAR requirements how did you stay motivated?
i got 99 for a course that required me to only get a bit lower (not as low as you though) but to me it was more of a matter of just ending school on a high note because i knew i was capable of a 99 ATAR (so it acts as a good motivator. not to boast or flex or glaze yourself and pretend you peaked at hs but just a motivator for you to do your best) + building good study habits and discipline for university and beyond (especially the last part, pushing myself to do well meant that i had to take matters into my own hands which is something i carried w me into uni)

btw this doesn't mean you sacrifice things like social life for a good ATAR, you can get very good marks and a high ATAR without having to do that

Isn’t that only for primary school teaching

how did you manage to balance your subjects + get a 99 ATAR + manage social life?

how did you manage to balance your subjects + get a 99 ATAR + manage social life?
being a little bit ahead of school helped (e.g. learning one chem module per term ahead in the holiday break preceding), making notes for stuff like bio and modern history
also like for subjects like english and modh i did do a lot of past papers and got peer feedback with them (like one per week).
mainly tho i knew my limits. i did not care for studying like 10 hours a day and on a normal day only spent very few hours after i came home from school then called it a day then did whatever i wanted to do.

i'm sure people who got higher 99s have better study tips but i'm ngl your holidays are still your holidays, make time to hang out with your friends throughout the year and make some time for yourself. having a decent social life and still hanging out with your friends inside and outside of your school do have positive effects on your mental health + wellbeing so making time for it from time to time will help you out in the long run. i was hanging out with friends in the lead-up to hsc and during the hsc we were still very active on social media lol. i know some people delete social media and keep socialisation to a minimum but a part of discipline is ensuring you have balanced moderation of anything which helps you out in the long-run beyond school and into your regular life

also. sometimes u wake up on the weekends and you just want to rot in bed and watch youtube and not touch any of ur work at all. that's fine and don't beat urself up for it, but make sure you don't do it too much (keep everything in moderation).

just thought id add since my course only needed 93 and realistically even a 70 and id get to do more or less the same thing

the main reasons for me were scholarships and having the flexibility to do other degrees if I wanted. for scholarships it def made a difference, I didn’t get any from usyd but I got a pretty decent chunk from my high school and a lot of big scholarship offers from other unis which would’ve been nice if went to them. for flexibility it was definitely nice to know I had options, tbh my degree preferences changed so many times over year 12 and it was really nice to be able to just do literally any degree I wanted when it came down to it so I wasn’t ever locked out of options based on my results.

the main thing I didn’t expect was that my individual subject marks and ATAR did actually provide some help in uni, because at usyd a lot of the time there are advanced/ssp versions of subjects that require you to have gotten a certain mark in its corresponding high school subject or a certain ATAR. those advanced subjects have been great for me in uni because it means that you get to learn more interesting stuff, and get way better classes and group project members - a ton of my closest friends come from those subjects

the advice id give for your situation is to aim to do really well but don’t stress yourself out about it, like put in the work but understand that at the end of the day it’s ok if you don’t get some crazy ATAR because you’ll still get into your course anyway. obviously that’s not always easy but if you can get into that mindset you’ll do really well and have a really enjoyable year 12

is it true that if u go to a ~500 ranked school yet do exceptionally well (ie- get a rank 1-2 in all subjects, for refrence 4u english, modern, bio, PE), its impossible to get a 97-99+ atar since its a bad school? cos thats what i was told + i was told 4u eng ranks bad and thus 99+ is impossible? is that true? i thought that if u did well - ie got a first rank in every subject plus did well in the exams the school does not matter

My school was ranked 550ish. I got a 99.10. Not impossible, just rank 1 everything

I forgot to bring this up but its probably one of the best reasons to push yourself in HS - Band 6s and high ATARs mean you can find lots of students to private tutor which is the best way to make money in Uni - other than tutoring/lab demonstrating at the uni itself

I went to a terribly ranked school and it didn’t really impact me, you just have to sweat internals and come first
