hey does anyone know how much info we need on these two dot points? i'm just worried about the details. thanks


 Identify oxides of non-metals which act as acids and describe the conditions under which they act as acids

 Analyse the position of these non metals in the Periodic Table and outline the relationship between position of elements in the Periodic Table and acidity/basicity of oxides

"Oxides of non-metals will react with water to form acids, and will react with bases to form salts."

"Oxides of metals are basic and oxides of non-metals are acidic. Since metals are on the left-hand side of the periodic table and non-metals on the right, then the elements from the left-hand side of the periodic table form basic oxides and those from the right form acidic oxides."


That's all you need to know. It's not really about testing your ability to define the terms, but your skills in demonstrating this knowledge in exams - e.g. a question that tells you to write the equation of carbon dioxide reacting with sodium hydroxide.

You also might want to know that acidic oxides are covalent compounds and basic oxides are ionic compounds.

In addition to the 2nd dot point:
* As you go across a period from left to right, the oxides go from basic to acidic. Some oxides in groups II, III, IV are amphoteric (can react with both acids and bases and therefore have both basic and acidic properties).

* With basic oxides, their basic nature increases as you go down a group as metals become more metallic down the group.

* With acidic oxides, their acidic nature increases as you go up a group because non-metals decrease in metallic character as you go up a group.

* Most transition metal oxides are basic. Exceptions are ZnO and ZrO2, which are both amphoteric.

hi,
for this i suppose that v r supposed to know that:
for the 1st one : when reacted with water, the non metal oxides like NO2, SO3, P4O10 and Cl2O7 produce acids and include reactions!!

for the 2nd : the oxides of elements having increasingly acidic character go from left to right across the periodic table.
