If a student was doing 5.2/5.1 mathematics course during year 10, would they be able to do extension 1 maths in year 11/12 since a school isn't allowed to stop a student doing a subject they want?

They would STRONGLY recommend that you didn't take it, and I mean veeeery strongly, because you would be destined for a very low e1. My school strongly recommends that anyone that wasn't in 5.3 doesn't take advanced.

My friend did that, slightly different though. He was in lower 5.2, and then he was forced to take general maths, after that even though his general maths marks weren't good he studied extension 1 topics all day enough to pass the test the teacher set him and she allowed him in. I guess its less about understanding and more about working hard,people don't need to be naturally smart for it.

I'd say its possible if you start putting in work now.
I've been in the 5.2 pathway in Year 9 - moved up to 5.3 this year and averaged an A, so I'd definitely say it's possible for you as well.

this isn't for me, I did the 5.3 course in years 9 and 10, but I found it a bit curious how people in 5.1/5.2 in my school wanted to do extension maths when they found their course difficult.

Oh I see... 5.2 people have a chance as they don't miss as many key topics, but I'd say 5.1 is just too large of a stretch. Just my opinion :p

I'm sure we discussed this on another thread, but I'm in the same boat; I did 5.1 and 5.2 in Year Nine and 5.3 in Year Ten. Engineering here we come!

Back on topic, at my school they don't let anyone who isn't doing quite well in 5.3 do extension 1, let alone 5.2/5.1 students. They don't like letting 5.2 students do advanced either, the way they see it they don't want to set us up for failure. Considering people who do well in 5.3 with strong work ethics can struggle in mx1, I don't see how someone who did 5.1/5.2 could catch up and still manage to pull decent marks/ranks (not saying it's impossible though).

Generally not, however there have been some cases where some people were allowed to do the extension 1 course. But they are in the minority which means you would have to work extremely hard to even be considered doing the course anyway.

They are legally obliged to let you do the course regardless of your skill level unless the class is already full.

But those who would want to do that course beyond their level would have to catch up on the skills they've missed out. Besides, not everyone is inclined to anyway.

I don't think 5.2 kids have a chance either tbh. My school only lets the very top of 5.3 do Ext. 1, and a lot of them generally drop out, so if the top maths kids in year 10 find ext. 1 difficult, I don't see how anyone from 5.1 or 5.2 could do well enough to make it worthwhile.

Year 10 gives a good indication of natural mathematical ability, because nobody studies, so all test results are all based on natural ability. A 5.2 kid does not have the natural ability to do Ext 1, and you do need some sort of natural ability to do well in the course.

Well we had a 3U test the other day and lets say only the dropouts in accelerated managed to passed, and even then it would be by 1 or 2 marks so that was a terrible indicator of our grade in 3u overall... we have 3, 3u classes + 1 accelerated 3U, this is because they took the top 2 maths classes and any kids that wanted to do 3u (hence the 3rd class) and since theyre not allowed to drop people, they're finding it hard because the last test given gave no indication who was weak or strong because it was way too difficult.

I'd say that it would be a stretch for the average 5.2 student to do MX1, although quite a few have the potential. I have quite a few 5.2 students and I'd say that some have the capability to try 3U. Often what happens with some reasonably talented students is they are used to cruising through maths in primary which causes them to become extremely complacent in Years 7 and 8 (hese are often the type of people who are good at maths, but need to really focus in order to ensure that they understand the work). As a result, they fall a bit behind knowledge wise which causes them to slip into 5.2. So it isnt rare to see talented students in 5.2. The main concern relates to the fact that MX1 has assumed knowledge exclusive to the 5.3 course. So a 5.2 student would need to catch up on the work by themselves, which can be an issue considering that a lack of motivation and/or skill is what landed them in 5.2 to begin with.

As for a 5.1 student, I'd say that it is a bad idea for them to try MX1. From what I've seen, 5.1 is usually reserved for the poorest maths students. As is the case for the vast majority of students, if you have the talent to do MX1, you should be able to scrape your way into 5.2 in the earlier years even with a poor effort. So I'd say that it would be a very rare case/set of circumstances where a 5.1 student has the capacity for MX1.
