Players only have careers for 20yrs at most, and thats if they start very young and reach the big time quickly (16-36). After that they fall from the top leagues and often retire quickly. Anyway, the point being that their career lasts half of what a non-sporting person's career lasts. So they have to make as much money as they can, to survive once they retire.

I agree that the current wages in Europe are crazy, like common what does Beckham do that allows him to earn 100,000 pounds a week. But $75,000 a yr for the new Australian league, isnt going to allow that person to retire comfortably. But as someone said, they have to start small and ensure sustainable growth in the clubs, wage levels and quality of play.
