Hey, congratulations on getting into ANU.

The only tips I can offer..

I figure you've been to the University Accommodation Services site which lists additional short term options as well as lists share accommodation, houses for rent and the likes on the Housing Online site.

I've also just copied and pasted information I got sent from the University Accommodation Service people...

In order to look for rental accommodation we strongly advise you come to
Canberra at least 2-3 weeks before classes commence in order to give yourself
time to search for rental accommodation. Suggestions for temporary
accommodation are:
Heritage Hotel Canberra - <http://www.hotelheritage.com.au/>
(Special offer for ANU students)
Canberra City Backpackers - <http://www.canberrabackpackers.net.au/>
YHA Canberra - <http://www.yha.com.au/hostels/details.cfm?HostelID=15>
City Walk Hotel - <http://www.citywalkhotel.com.au/>

How long the search will take depends on your budget and personal requirements.
Usually it takes between 2 to 4 weeks to find something suitable provided you
search every day.

UAS WEBSITE
For up to date information on accommodation options please check our website
frequently. New information on accommodation will be posted on the UAS website
at: <http://accom.anu.edu.au>

HOUSING ONLINE
A good place to start is our housing online website. Housing online is an
electronic noticeboard with a listing of private accommodation (both share and
accommodation available)

SHOPFRONT
UAS will be operating a shopfront located in Union Court from 19th January until
mid March 2004. Staff will be able to provide you with one on one advice and
assistance in finding rental accommodation.

Operating hours will be 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Further information on the shopfront can be found at:
<http://accom.anu.edu.au/shopfront.asp>

Good luck! :)

I have a place in amaroo with an arts/law student and an apprentice chef... which, totally coincidently, are both from my area (rural nsw) and are doing the two things I would have seriously considered doing post HSC (I chose law over being a chef for obvious reasons :) )

I just sent off a crapload of e-mails, 99/100 either didn't reply or said the room was taken, but I guess its just a matter of persistance... oh and if it is this late, I would be ringing every number you can find as well as sending e-mails... also: keep in mind the majority of people want to 'interview' you to be a housemate... which means you need to organise a time to go to canberra and meet them...

the sites I went to:
ANu accomodation wesbite (already linked)

UC accomodation wesbite (I think its www.uc.gov.au then search for accomodation) - although this is not anu, alot of the places will still be within 1/2 hours travel time to anu...

http://canberraexchange.com.au - decent listing of places and you can put an ad up yourself

www.canberratimes.com.au - check the classifieds, there is *heaps* up there... also good if you are looking for a job... there is a fair bit of stuff on there

www.flatmates.com.au

and finally...

www.easyroommate.com.au - you sign up and they e-mail you all the places that fit whatever you have specified, so you can contact them if you want. This is where I found my place...
