I have a bit of a question for you guys, who, like me work fairly hard at school in all subjects.

Everyone in their school has a person or people who are perceived as being the high achievers, good scorers, possible-dux recipients. These people are those who we often try to overcome in exams/assessment tasks. By setting ourselves that goal, we often achieve close to that person or past.
"That person" could infact be you, or like me, you could be coming second, third, fourth, fifth, any of these places.

So what are some tips on surpassing these people to achieve YOUR OWN personal best. You know you can do it, but Heck, "they" might not even be first, they could just be your friend you want to beat.

In my own case, one of my best friends is that person, and i'm not being selfish or anything but I think it's about time I tried my hardest to beat her. :3 We find it a fun thing to do, it never gets in the way of our friendship. I have always come very close but never close enough.

Do you have this problem? Or have you had it?

Almost every student has someone that they strive to beat.

Tips? Study, learn what they do and try your best.

Sometimes it can be a friend but as long as it is healthy competition I don't see anything wrong.

oh! and dont try to "just" beat them, try to get 100%!!!!!!!!! then that way u will try evn harder, n u wont b like "ok, i gotta get 90 to come 1st, so i dun need to study as much"

I don't think you can really try for a mark I mean you can have a goal of achieving a certain mark but it isn't as though if you think you are up to that mark you stop answering questions.

I'll be modest and say that that person would be me at my school.

And I guess I try to just stay on top, which keeps me motivated.

Of course, there are some others who get ahead of me, but I always try to beat most people.

Either way, it's pretty easy at my school as everyone's pretty mediocre when it comes to school :)

well, this may be a bit bias as i am friends with TDjie at school.

but yeah, i have had "competitions" with my friends - i feel competitive with TDjie in maths especially but its not harmful - it motivates me (i dont know about her) to do the work... i am always trying to keep up with her (im lazy :() so she especially motivates or forces me to work during class.

i've had the competition of friends ever since like yr 8. i thought this girl (who is now my best friend) was a bitch because she got way better marks then me - now she finds it difficult to get higher then me altho we are currently tieing in cafs basically.

these competitions, altho help motivate me somehow, are not the reason why i strive to achieve my best - its because i want to be the best i possibly can... im a nerd and im a perfectionist so theres not much else to it.

i believe some level of healthy competition is good because otherwise why do it? but i still believe - do not kill urself in order to be the top person, it will only degrade you in the long run when u are no longer able to keep up with being top

Do you find a need to push people in your class to keep up with you so you will all benefit from the ranking system? I've always wondered how many people who are ahead of everyone ever stop to ask someone if they need help.

i should start helping others - i just dont like it - because what happens if i dont explain it properly and then they get it wrong.

i also dont like helping others specially when i've had to do the work myself.

I definately help people if they ask me (but I'm a tad shy so I don't just ask people if they need help). It feels good to be able to teach someone something...

I've actually never thought about helping people to take advantage of the ranking system, but I don't think my encouragement would work anyway because, as I mentioned, not many people care about their school work at my school.

watt!!! bull! when did u beat me? :p

anyway answering the topic!...i always think a little healthy competition is great! it really can be a good motivation to boost your own performance. i say, if someone is beating you....and your goal is to beat them...DONT GIVE UP! Even if you dont manage to nab them by the end, by attempting to beat the best, your only going to doo better yourself!

my english class is pretty competitive!...ive got like two really talented 4u kids...and im only an advanced student, that in reality cant match them or come close to them on ability!....but i still set my goals to reach their level! and soo far its worked quite nicely. I know, even though their probably gonna beat me by the end...that having attempted to match them THROUGHOT the year ( not jst one off)...ive done better myself!

anyway GOODLUCK!...beating a close freind would be sweet!! (otherwise jst poison them or something...*dont get tempted*)

I've never thought of it that way but because my school is so little (22 people in Year 12) and my class sizes range from 2 to 9 I know everyone well and I am always ready to help them out. In Modern History for example there is a big difference in marks. It is a class of 4 and it's me (I generally get around 90% for Modern) and then 3 guys who barely get higher than 65%. The main problem for me is that the teacher can't go into too much detail and gives us way less homework than I would like (I know that sounds weird). I get really bored and have to push myself to do extra work. So, if I can help them out I definately do it - I like helping others and it helps me as well. But in regards to ranking system I wouldn't help someone just for that reason - I help to help.

Friendly competition is what makes me strive to do my utter best. It keeps me motivated when i study, and helps me to achieve the best marks that i can get. Essentially i set goals, in certain subjects i want to beat certain people. For some, these are my friends, and i don't really care that i beat, or if they beat me, but the friendly competition helps me to do well.

Its the unfriendly, hate-filled competiton that tears me apart emotionally and psycologically. Thats the kind of competition you should avoid, although it can't be helped.
For example, there's this guy who does no study, no work, and produces rubbish assessments and responses, and yet gets full marks. I want to beat him, everybody wants to beat him (some people even cheered me on to beat him), but something gets in the way. Combined with the fact that he shows off, acts superior and is completely daft (he has no common sense, is horrendously ignorant, and is an idiot to boot), the end result is that no-one likes him. I've thus proceeded to make his life terrible for the remaining 2 years, as i simply can't stand him.
