Hey People

is anyone doing Actuarial / Law at Macquarie?
Whats it like? How many years does it take to finish?
And what's the workload like?

I remember at the Macq open day the lecturer said
"If you want it easy at uni do medicine or law,
if you want it to be hard chose actuarial..."
so that put me off

so generally, just wondering if its worth it?

PS- what type of business would need a person
with both law and actuarial skills?

i dont know anyone that does them combined. MJ and flyin are the people to find. Someone who does both combined is up for some fun.. i think most drop the combine and keep with one.

EDIT: ooohhh, i rhyme :) (though i cheated and changed some of it to rhyme more.. i need to get a life :p)

One word: suicide (or so I hear...)

Really, a double degree isnt that bad workload-wise. If you go into uni doing a double degree, you know no different, and so its just life. But I know a few others who dropped their double degree (after being in a single degree for a year) because of the workload. In the end, if you want to do it, you will. Its that simple.

Law isnt cruisy, although if you keep up with the workload its not bad at all (but its too easy to fall behind). Its just all the reading involved.

Ask youself this: why do you want to do a double degree? Do you want it because you're interested in both ACST and Law? Or are you only interested in ACST and think it might be a good idea to tack law on the end because you got the UAI. If you are doing it for the latter reason, I really wouldnt reccomend it: A lot of law students drop out first year because they have no passion and no interest in it whatsoever. You'd be better off putting your time and energy into just a single degree, and get fantastic marks, rather than mediocre marks and a degree you're not that enthused about.

And where could you work? Places like Macquarie Bank... but then you could work there with just an ACST degree.

Most Actuarial/Law people, I knew, decided to drop the Law part of their double. Why? I might look very impressive (Actuarial/Law), but practically... if you want to be an actuary, Law is a lot of reading. If you want to be a lawyer or practice or end up in a finance firm, just do Commerce(Accounting, Finance, Economics or whatever)/Law, it's much easier. So to your PS question, the answer is probably investment banking (but you could get in with just Law or just Actuarial) or regulatory authorities - no place really "needs" the skills of both Actuarial/Law. But don't let me discourage you. (Disclaimer: these are my views, they are probably bias.)

Theoretically, you can do Actuarial/Law in 5 years if you overload and/or do Summer School, otherwise, its typically 6 years.

Is it worth it? Actuarial/Law: don't know, probably not.

Is Actuarial hard? Yes. Is it overrated in terms of difficulty? Yes.

Haha, nah you might want to turn up to the hot day classes, to check out the 'talent' and to test whether you can still walk after the beers.

I hear alot about actuarial being really difficult
and that you need to be a "maths person"
Im not the best at maths in my selective school
but I havent failed 4unit either, so i dont know
how hard it will be for me...

When i went to Macq's open day, some guy
said that he was a really maths-based person in yr 12
but found it hard to apply the maths to
commerce/ finance situations?

anyway, still looking for more advice

BTW- What's APRA?

APRA is basically the regulatory authority for all the insurers, banks, etc.

re: 4unit ability - don't think too much of it. As long as you study consistently, there is no real difficulty with acst (in spite of what that guy said...i even forgot his name by now =p )

lol gbong would have been able to do it if he wasnt so lazy i guess :p
Its an impressive degree if you can handle it...but in terms of its practicality, it'll give u a few options...perhaps corporate law, more likely IB type roles though...
