i've been reading a lot of the hype going around
and it appears that doing actuarial studies (+economics) nmay not be worth the hard work!
i'm not too sure about starting pay , but it seems job prospects are pretty darn crappy

thoughts?

The job propects are endless in China.

In Australia, their arn't that many places. Then again, there aren't that many graduates.

The pay is good.

opportunity in australia is stagnant but pay is good, wage rises pretty fast once u start workin

opportunity overseas is much better and pay is prolly also better

eg. in china there are only 20 something qualified actuaries apparently

LOL i wouldn't blame people if they have an actuarial degree and decide not to go to china...i mean you can work anywhere in the world, why would you choose china

also with four universities pumping out actuaries every year in australia, there are only around 1000 active working actuaries in australia

that is useless anyway, since afer a 4 year degree everything would have changed.

That is what I asked carreer's advisor and that is what he said.

no not really. it'd b fantasy come true if it was, but unfortunately the insurance industry in china is still young and the role of an actuary is still somewhat vague to them. with that being said, maybe in another 10yrs, things will be different.

don't underestimate the potential of china tho... tis THE fastest growing nation in the world... with the rapid growth, many aspects need to be updated... actuarial is definitely one of them...

however, i think actuarial is alot stricted in terms of opportunity... you either do actuarial or accountant, the scope is fairly limited...

Take a look here:
http://jobsearch.gov.au/joboutlook/default.aspx?PageId=AlphaSearch
It's a page set up by the Australian government to give people an idea of what occupation pays what. If you read the breakdown on actuary, the weekly earnings for 20-24 year olds is $815/week before tax.

Real actuaries in general, shouldn't even start their first job until 22. By the time, they have real qualifications they're 24..

Should just transfer to accounting.. ah wait.. they get even less. What now?

Thats what I also was led to believe. There's alot of hype around the occupation and I was surprised when I read that statistic. However, you must remember that there would definatley be alot of space to climb in that big corporate ladder and that the statistics gathered are taken for the age bracket 20-24.
