So basically I recently got back an in-class essay back, I did pretty well and got 18/20 but I'm still wondering how I can improve in the future bc the harshness of y11 marking compared to y10 has crushed me LMAO. The issue with my essay was that apparently it was "relatively short and underdeveloped" which I guess is fair since I ran out of time so it was only like 800 words. I definitely struggle with analysing and adapting my essays quickly and obviously that costs me valuable time but I don't really know how to improve my speed 😭

Is it just something you get better at with practice?? I do practice essays under the time conditions when preparing for exams but I absolutely take longer than I should thinking of stuff on the spot. Any advice is appreciated!!

yeah honestly the best way to improve at adaptation is to keep practicing. something i find helpful rather than doing whole essays under timed conditions (as this can be rather draining) is to get a random essay q and give myself ten minutes to come up with a thesis and topic sentences. i basically do this over and over again until i feel confident.

i adapt based off a really really general essay for mod a, idk what text you're doing for mod b and ik you're in y11, but i find mod b is generally harder to adapt (esp since I'm doing a suite of poetry) so i have multiple general thesis statements and paras which i try adapt. i find js having general essays/paras/thesis statements makes the process of adapting a lot easier (if you aren't alr adaptating based off of one).

go through as many past hsc exams as you can and find the module youre writing an essay on, then write a thesis statement for it. it helps with adapting essays on the spot. also analyse your rubric, generally your question will be somewhat related to the rubric for the module
