boys and girls the gap year is never full, the army is looking to expand by a number of batallions next year.

The majority will be full timers though. There not gonna fill battalions with gappies who'll piss off after 1 year, that's money wasted.

No thats not the case for the simple reason that the gap year is not intended for people to 'piss off after one year"

the program was originally designed to entice people on a gap year to a) stay in the ADF in the other ranks or b) to entice them to go to ADFA/RMC/OTS/RANC or do the ADF undergrad scheme.

So think if they get say 25% of the gappers staying on in the services in one of these capacities then their money would be well spent...

anyway where else would the gappers go if not an operational batallion? Kapooka is only desgined to take you for a few weeks you know?

Man that sucks, i seriously cant see myself at uni in 2009.

Yeah i expect it would be full, i was accepted into gun number for second preference. I Leave on the 8th of DEcember, does anyone else?.

And im not so sure about the idea of the gap year neva being full, its all budgeted and i wouldnt see them taking say 2000 soldiers for twelve months with the possibility that 75% may drop out after the year is out... wouldnt be feesable to fit within a defence budget, in my opinion anyway.

no they told me sometime after my assesment day via phone .. recieved enlistment papers a day or 2 after that..good luck anyway

OK to clear a few things up, i have just come back from my assessment day. YES THE GAP YEAR HAS A QUOTA INTAKE!!!! i was accepted into the Navy Gap Year but im not looking at getting in until mid next year even end of the year. But as soon as someone drops out that position in mine. And i know have that relief of having a guaranteed position for next year.

So my advice is dont give up go to your assessment day and get the spot you want. If not they may offer you something better!!!!.

Just had my assessment day recently and was recommended for both my preferences (NAVY GAP, OP GBAD- ARMY). I am in the same position as haystack, just gotta wait til somebody pulls out, which apparently is likely to happen once TERs are released. For those interested, make sure you know what's involved. If you are joining because you think it sounds like a cool thing to do and had no real prior interest in service life you will most likely not get in. If you do, it's not a holiday, you will be trained alongside regular sailors/soldiers (it's a little different for RAAf - OE), be yelled at and generally work your arse off at all hours of the day/night. Once you finish your training it tapers off a bit, but you are still in the military and you will still be the "fuckin' gappie" for the rest of the year.

If you are still interested but get knocked back due to availability, you can still consider reserves/full time (that is, there is no time period before being able to apply again). Also keep in mind your aptitude test results and education history will, more so than regular applicants, influence your application as the whole idea is to suck us back in as officers once we have finished the 12 months.

Just a final word on the assessment day and what to expect:
Nurse
You will be required to sit an audiogram (hearing test), have your measurements (height, weight etc) taken. Be subjected to an eyesight test and a colourblindness test. You will also be required to submit a urine sample for analysis.
Doctor
The doctor will perform a thorough examination, and by thorough I mean thorough. Let's leave it at that.
Psychologist
This is pretty much to see whether you are suitable for the physical and mental demands that will be placed on you during your career in the ADF. Best advice is just answer as truthfully and comprehensively as possible.
Defence Interviewer
This is the final stage, you will be interviewed by a serving member, most likely warrant officer or equivalent. He or she will have the final say in whether you are suitable or not based on your performance in this particular interview and the day in general. There's not much you can do here, just know your stuff and make sure you are prepared for the ADF and understand what will be required of you. At the end of the day it's more a judge of your character than anything else.

Also, be prepared to wait up to 1-1.5 hours between each section. It is highly unlikely you will be there for less than 4 hours and could be there for over 6.

just curious about the navy gap year assesment day, i know that you have to study about the recruit training and all that, but what specific job do you study for, because on my preference list it just says "Navy Gap Year", i have my assesment day in a week exactly, and i dont know which job to prepare for, is it a sailor?, im not sure, because in the Gap Year brochure it doesnt state what specific jobs are available to you, just what areas you will learn: "You will learn skills in the areas of logistics, general navy operations,etc"
Any help would be great

I had this same problem, called up my case manager and he said you can be posted anywhere. So yeah, don't learn a specific job because it isn't one, more of a work experience type thing unlike the Army gap where you just do a job with an out clause in your contract. Just learn as much as you can about the Defence Force and RAN in general. Also I wouldn't hold your breath for a spot because as I understand it there's very little chance now of getting a spot. My advice would be to have a backup preference, be it Army GAP or a full-time spot, remember there's no obligation to serve until you have actually enlisted so you can bail out at the last minute if you want. I think though you may as well give it a shot for full time or reserves for that matter. Also to anybody else who's interested, as far as I know if you don't have an assessment day booked already you won't be getting one (for GAP that is).

my best friends in the army, she hated the first 3 months. she broke her feet and they tried to mae her stay for another 3 months but she soldiered on and almost had to be in a wheelchair for 6 months.

the gap year was full ages ago, i applied like 2 years ago but decided i didnt wanna do it. money shouldnt be ur only goal...

u should join the army with ur uni course, they pay for everything and u only have to do service with them for the length of ur course plus 1 extra year.

so if ur couse if three years, you do the course then stay with te army for another 4 years.
im joining the airforce, the uniform is sick and the men are hot

I wouldnt degrade my self like that for 35k. Get a real career and you'll be better off in the long run.

???? i don't understand the logic??? degrade yourself by protecting your country??? yes it does seem rather degrading. i'd much rather spend my gap year working at McDonald's or KFC or sleeping actually.

it is a well known fact that regardless of a country's economic stability members of the defence force will continue to be paid. tell us again who will be better off in the long run... actually by the look of things the short run too...

For my one (this was officer entrance) you had Dr and sometimes Nurse and other specialists depending on what they are testing at the time.

They tend not to crowd the room for obvious privacy issues lol

I had just the doctor and so did everybody else I spoke to at my assessment day. On the Medical History Questionaire you can opt to have a chaperone present if you want. The medical isn't really a big deal, it's about 3.5 seconds worth of awkwardness, the rest is what you'd expect from a typical physical.

I was thinking about doing the Gap Year with the Army in 2010..
Will i have to go and fight in other countries?
And i want to make sure that it is only a commitment for a year. Meaning that i am not committed to do anything with ADFA after the year ends.
