Hello the all those who just finished their HSC. I hope you guys did well. ^__^ And hello to the those doing the HSC in 2013 (like me hehe).

I was just wondering if anyone could recommend some good businesses as case studies. My school is doing crumpler but honestly, it's not really interesting to me and I'd like to go my own way and find case studies to research on. So if you guys can recommend any good businesses (and if it's not too much trouble, websites/resources where I can find info relating to the syllabus on these websites) for me to do? And please don't say Qantas, I think everyone will be doing it and I don't really want to make the markers bored with reading another qantas extended response lol :)

And also, if you could answer these additional questions it'd be really helpful:
1. How many case studies would you recommend?
2. How exactly do I find information for these case studies?
3. Do you need to have a case study for every syllabus dot point?
4. How would you set out the case studies for studies notes?

I'm sorry for the tons of questions but it'd me really helpful if you guys could answer these questions. Thank you so much and I'd really appreciate any answers. ^__^

So true about the Qantas case study lol. I did billabong and oroton idk where you get them from, but my teacher gave us a selection and you just choose which ones you. Harvey norman was okay, but also a little boring. About the syllabus thing, i dont think you need it for every dot point, but use it as background information. plus, usually there are subheadings in case studies which relate to certain dot point in the syllabus.

I actually find Crumpler interesting - predominately because it also had a case study of Roper and Miller trying to run a courier service before hand. But if you find it boring, AussieBum and Billabong are used by my school and most of my class seem to find them interesting, though I'm not a fan of Billabong as they've been in financial trouble recently. I only have Cumpler because I have a second textbook.

This, also McDonalds.

Eventually you'll find that different businesses work well with different dot points, so I guess keep an eye out.

Most people use Qantas as a case study since there is a booklet out which covers most dot-points well (saving a lot of time of trying to find case studies for every dot point). I think it was the 2012 HSC exam which probably proved that you do need case studies for most of the dotpoints. Although I know you said you didn't want Qantas I think it's viable just because of its efficiency.

However, if you want to differentiate yourself then do Qantas though get information on other businesses (Dailmer AG, the company which manufacture Mercedes-Benz's cars implementing a telecommunication service called mbrace for technology under Operation off the top of my head). There is no limit to how many businesses you can use. (I think I used 4-5 for my trials and HSC).

But heading back to Qantas, especially for the Finance and HR section (for benchmarking HR performance and workplace disputes), it would be much more efficient to buy this case study textbook (provides all the financial data and strategies the business uses). It also covers marketing processes and strategies pretty well (a lot of information). That being said it would probably be better to find information on other businesses for marketing and operations, with these usually being better than the information provided by Qantas (Coca-Cola Amatil and Apple Inc. as Aysce stated are great examples). The information isn't too hard to gather either.

As for using major case studies provided by textbooks (Crumpler, Billabong), personally I don't like it (though other people may have different opinions). I think it's more flexible to just buy the Qantas booklet and get information on other businesses as well.

tl;dr It'd be good to use Qantas in dot points where the case study booklet provides a lot of information on or if there is not much information for other businesses on the dotpoint, though there is nothing stopping you for collecting information on other businesses to differentiate yourself.
