For the prac on the cycloalkanes, cycloalkenes and bromine water, what is the equation of the reaction between the cycloalkene and the bromine water ?

Thanks =]

Cyclohexan + bromine water [aquoes solution of bromine br2] - no reaction

cyclohexene + br2 - addition reaction.

Cyclohexene reacts because the Br2 breaks a double bond and joins the molecule at the point where the double bond was (i.e. breaks the pi/sigma bonds to form two pi bonds @ sp3)

C6H10 + Br2 -> C6H10Br2 lol

Or from previous threads =]

cyclohexane with bromine water
C6H12 (aq) + Br2 (aq) - - - > C6H11Br + HBr (with UV)

Cyclohexene

C6H10 (aq) + Br2 (aq) - - - > C6H10Br2
[lol i posted the same thing in the other thread by accident]

Br<sub>2</sub> + H<sub>2</sub>O <---> HOBr + Br<sup>-</sup> + H<sup>+</sup>

Acyclic Alkenes:
C<sub>n</sub>H<sub>2n</sub> + HOBR --> C<sub>n</sub>H<sub>2n</sub>BrOH

Cyclic Alkenes:
C<sub>n</sub>H<sub>2n-2</sub>+ HOBR --> C<sub>n</sub>H<sub>2n-2</sub>BrOH

Bromine water they expect HOBr

I concur.

This should be the proper reaction.

HOBr is the most accurate one but if you write Br2 (aq) you won't lose mark (if lucky) or just a bit. lolz.

It's like S +O2-> SO2 is the simplest and most popular but to be accurate, you must write: S8 +8O2 -> 8SO2

Cheers.
