Just a quick congrats to everyone that'll be joining UNSW next year. :) You might work like you've never worked before, some say its like doing the HSC twice a year, but you'll still have fun. :)
I always say that! There are assessments from week 3 onwards, usually 1 or 2 assessments every week. You'll find yourself preparing for the mid-session exam already by week 4. If you don't cram constantly you'll go from 99 point something UAI to failing uni. On the flip side, if you work hard, even if your UAI is not that good, you can still achieve many HDs.

Hey can someone provide info into the changes to electrical engineering?
Starting next year, all engineering degrees at UNSW will have common first year subjects, with some electives, you then start to specialise in second year. They did this because they found people were stuck in engineering degrees they never realised they didn't like - this gives them the chance to try it out before they fully commit themselves to a specialisation.

What is all that different? Are there many changes to reuired subjects?
Lets have an intro: typically a uni student does 4 subjects.

Before 2006 Elec Eng student will have to do 14 mini-subjects (but actually worth 8 subjects for your degree) during second year. This would mean you have to do a total of maybe 12 exams throughout the year.

Now keeping track of that 14 subjects in a year is tedious. And also having a workload of 14 subject kills and each subject aren't easy.

The new "reformed" degree take away that worried and now student only have to do 8 subjects typically in a year. That one reason why it is easier IMO. And the fact that not having to remember allll these nonsense throughout the year is second plus.

Do you still think it is the best place (most challenging, best courses, most reputable...) to do an electrical engineering degree in Sydney?
Attaining an engineering degree in sydney is not that bad (at least it is recognisable nearly world-wide). But for a doctoral degree i suggest get it in the northern hemisphere because of the facilities available there. Just a thought.

Also if you do a combined degree in say science you will I assume have to complete the new electrical engineering degree requirements correct?
I don't quite understand that question, sorry. But basically you will have to do the normal subjects that a straight EE have to do, then do another year of science subjects. You don't start the science part till second year anyway.

Cheers

YES! It's REALLY hard! :p

Well, depends what field of science and what type of person you are. Are you a Bio, chem or Physics person?

Just prepare to come to uni 23-24 hrs a week and at home do your assignments, read lab notes beforehand, prepare for tests...

I got a thread somewhere describing my experience at uni during my first semester, let me try to dig it up :D

Edit: Ok I found it :D

I think most people who has experienced uni would agree with me here:

First Semester at Uni

Week 1-3: "OMG UNI is SOOO easy, there's NOTHING to do! No assignments, No homework, the course material is SO easy! gonna get HD for sure."

Week 4-7:
"OMG WHAT IS HAPPENING??! Why all of the sudden we have so much to learn and revise?? argh...haven't done my readings for the past 2 weeks. ARGH! Mid-semester exams coming! oh and need to do some research for upcoming assignments/reports! *panic*"

Thank god for the mid-session break to catch up on a bit of work, but bludged 90% of the time and still behind!

Week 8-12: "^%#$##@$^% Need to finish multiple assignments this week. CRAP! did poorly in the mid-session tests, need to do well witht he assignments now! NO time to do readings at all! never mind, i'll have to use the cramming method to prepare for upcoming exams!"

Week 13 to 14: "ARGHHHH Exams COMING! *dead* Will fail in XXXX1YYY for sure! noooooo....need to cram harder! CRAM! STUPID BRAIN! DAMMIT! I just need 50 to paaaassss! Gimmmeee!" *sniffs*"

This is a typical semester of a uni student *

*Excludes High Achievers like gman, sunny, McLake, wogboy, timmy, Lord Ac... :D

If you like Chem, then it should be too bad :D
All my notes are on hard copy, but I can give you the 2003 past paper for Chem1021 so you can have a look at what you'll learn. Just PM me your email. :)
