I have a 5 year old PC that would really like a new CPU, I was thinking of getting of getting an Athlon II X4 640. Thing is, it's a new AM3 CPU and my motherboard is old and has an old AM2 socket. The system bus speed will only run at HyperTransport 1.0 standard, will this cripple performance?

I currently have an Athlon 64 X2 4000+ OCed to 3 GHz, will the performance gains warrant a new purchase?

You should be able to use the new AM3 processor if you update the bios.
Look up the mobo's specs/website and it should tell you whether it's compatible after updating or something

You can't use an AM3 CPU with an AM2 socket...
You need at least AM2+.
Just buy a new motherboard, you can get one for ~$120 on pc case gear.

edit: Sorry, AM3 CPU's will only fit into an AM3 Socket...

AM3 CPUs work in AM2 motherboards.

stick it in, turn it on and if magical blue smoke comes out and takes you to la la land, then something's wrong.
