Hey, thought I'd join in the discussion (confusion).
So, say they ask for an example of an amphiprotic substance using equations...
Would the following be what they're after?
HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup> + H<sub>2</sub>O --> CO<sub>3</sub><sup>2-</sup> + H<sub>3</sub>O
HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup> + H<sub>2</sub>O --> H<sub>2</sub>CO<sub>3 </sub>+ OH<sup>-</sup>
OR would it be more like this?
HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup> + OH<sup>-</sup> --> <sup></sup>CO<sub>3</sub><sup>2-</sup> + H<sub>2</sub>O
HCO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup> + H<sub>3</sub>O<sup>+</sup> --> H<sub>2</sub>CO<sub>3</sub><sup>- </sup>+ OH<sup>-</sup>
Or is the latter more like what they would want if the question had asked for an example of an amphoteric substance with equations?
Do you think we could simply use either in either case?
