i'm doing a speech on food and dining of pompeii and herculaneum
i feel like i'm jumping from point to point
are there any existing tips on 'acing' an ancient history speech?
so far i've talked about garum, the triclinium, wine, olive oil, a list of the food found, wilhelmina f. jashemski, bread, dining scenes.............................
i also feel like i should be talking about written and archaeological sources, although i believe i have (are there any major examples?)
and how should i write my conclusion?
i haven't written a speech since term 1!

did you mention how the wealthy ate much better food in comparison to the poor...
- the poor usually ate a type of warm porridge
- the wealthy ate a huge variety of foods such as fish, olives, figs, grapes, cheese, meats etc

- the wealthy had lavished dinner parties whereas the poor did not
- the wealthy had slaves to do all the cooking/cleaning/serving of the food
- the people would eat in a reclined position=they were basically lying down on their side as it was easier to digest food (usually lying on their left)
- they ate with their hands and drank lots of wine
- they were very messy eaters :haha:

There have been wooden couches found in several of the excavated houses of Pompeii, and there are also masonry couches in the gardens which were used when dining outside. Dinner parties were sometimes an opportunity for the rich to display their wealth, for example by providing entertainment in the form of dancers, acrobats and singers or by using an expensive dinner service.

hopefully this information will help

and here is some information to write a speech:
  • WHO the speech is for
  • WHAT the speech is to be about - main points ranked in order of importance with supporting research
  • HOW long it needs to be
How to write a speech

The basic 'how to write a speech' format is simple. It consists of threeparts:
  • an opening or introduction
  • the body where the bulk of the information is given
  • and an ending (or summary).
- Always start with an intro example: Good Morning, today i will be talking/informing you on the Food and Dining customs of the people of Pompeii and Herculaneum (this is just an example lol)

- Then begin your speech with the most important points...gather the information into 3-7 main points and remove any that aren't necessary.

- Link your intro, main points and conclusions together

- Then write a conclusion that summarises each of the points, restates your main purpose and leaves the audience with a lasting impression :)

I really hope this helps
any more problems just ask
and sorry for babbling on a bit i tried to summarise it as much as possible

haha thanks for this :)

i've already finished my speech though
all i've got left to do is a conclusion

i'm not meant to talk about what the wealthy ate only, and what the poor ate only
just food and dining in general
but i have distinguished in some areas the wealthy and poor eg. garum
