I'm first year Animal Science, yes it is a good course and is held with a pretty high regard in industry. I think it would suit nearly anyone because it is so broad and allows for many career options. However it is just a glorified B AgSci. It is no different to mainstream agriculutre, the only difference is that the electives for 3rd and 4th year have already been chosen. We share all our lectures with all other ag students. There is only 26 anim sci students - currently most of them a whinging because we haven't actually started anything to do with animals. - which doesn't bother me. My only concern is that by doing Anim Sci, I am now restricted to only animals, I am unsure whether I should be doing it anymore, I've thought about dropping back down to ag science which is even more broad. All of the anim sci students are what I call "reject vets" we all missed the cut off, there are about 3 guys - but that doesn't really matter cause we're in the ag people so it's pretty even. Anyhow, if you have anymore questions, just ask.

Yes, I am one of those. I am a big whinger. The animal Science course is falsely advertised, seriously, If you seriously dont think you'll get into vet, then aim for marks in the 70's, have a bit a break, becuase Ag is exactly the same, you can do all the same subjects as animal, and everyone does all the same stuff in the first 2 years anyway.
By the way - if you intend to transfer, the transfer people dont see what course you did, only your student number and marks, so if you think you can do better to transfer in an easier course, than do that.

PS- even though ag has a low UAI, it is a hard course, almost 30 hours a week, much harder than some courses with high uai's like law an other arts type courses. But then I guess it depends where your talents lie. (and you have to do maths!)

Hey megan, how's it doing - I hate to be narky and disagree with you - but they do consider other things besides your marks when you try and cross over. I mean marks are the main factor, but they are very big on people showing their commitment to vet sci - i.e. work experience and other background.

Hey ez
Have you spoken to the vet sci people? the work experience and all that is only worth about 5% of what they look at on your application. Its 40% uni marks, and 55% stat test and only if you have acceptable results for those do they look at your commitmtnet etc. But, I just spoke to the Murdoch people, and they put a much higher value on work experience and comitment, but you still have to have really good marks (do u see that happening for Biometry?)
I would prefer if they did interviews, like for medicine, because then you'd have more of a chance to beg and plead.

thanks for your help guys... i've come to the conclusion that i don't really want to do vet enough to go through doing an extra year, working really hard etc.. because although i'd like it and be prob quite good at it, i would rather do animal management type of thing, and feel more at home doing it...
i hear what you are saying about ag sci being the same as animal sci (that is what you are saying right?) which confuses me - why do they make u have to get 20 more marks for your UAI when it's exactly the same subjects and students as in ag sci.?? plus my parents will be dissapointed in me (as will i) if i just slack off and aim for 70's... and when u leave uni, doesn't animal sci look better than ag sci?
i do 2U maths, so i'll be ok with the maths side (i did do 3U but i dropped coz i had 12 units and was feeling pressure)

I think they did it to attract people into the faculty, becuase a lot of people dont even consider agriculture, but if people see the high UAI, then they consider the course. especiallly for wannabe vets.

the high UAI requirement for animal science is a result of the people who apply, i.e. people who don't quite make the vet cut off.

but technically, if you didn't get into animal sci, only into vet... you can choose the same subjects in 3rd and 4th year as animal sci right? which means that it's the same? or are there specialised subjects that are JUST animal science people in 3rd/4th yr
