hey there,
i've recently been looking over uni's to which im looking to apply and ANU seemed to stand out, it also says online that ANU is the best uni in australia. is this true?
just a couple of questions:
1. what's the combined commerce/economics degree like at anu? is the department good?
2. Is the nightlife at ANU good? like how often are parties on?
3. why, if ANU is the best uni in aus is the ATAR requirements significantly lower?
4. Who tends to go to ANU? city kids? country people?

cheers

1) See my thoughts about the combined Eco/Commerce degree here: Commerce/eco combined degree
2) Not sure about the ANU nightlife, but I'd assume it's not as good as Sydney or Melbourne
3) ANU is the most internationally renowned university in Australia. This is primarily because it outputs the most research and probably has the best academic scholars. This makes for an excellent economics faculty - probably the best in Aus, and certainly the one with the best industry connections to the traditional economics paths such as RBA, ABS, productivity commission etc. Slightly less so for commerce (faculty experience is more academic based rather than with industry experience) - still, it's a good course. Commerce at ANU also has the disadvantage compared to Sydney/Melbourne universities of not having as good links with industry simply due to location.

Do you know what sort of field you eventually want to get into?

ANU's ATAR is lower because the demand for the course isn't as high as say USyd. This is because USyd is in Sydney, while ANU is in Canberra (Sydney being an older uni could also have something to do with it).

4) ANU attracts quite a few different types of people. Those who want to work in government, academia or research, those who want a great quality course but didn't get the ATAR to get into their first choice uni, people who want to work oversees (due to international rep), people who live in Canberra and international students who choose where to study based on rankings.

In summary, it's an excellent uni, probably the best in Australia. However, this depends on what you want to do. If you want to do commerce and become an accountant, banker etc then better to go to UMelb/USyd/UNSW if you can. If you want to become an economist, government worker or go into academia then ANU is the best choice.
