you probably don't need to know this, but it's to do with the setting-up of instantaneous dipoles within substances due to the motion of electrons "revolving" about the nucleus. It only acts for an instant between neighbouring atoms/ ions and hence is weak.

Dispersion forces are as nit said are small very shortly lived dipoles set up by orbiting electrons.

They are also referred to as if I am not mistaken van der Wall's forces.

It is this which hydrocarbons/poly(ethene) get their boiling point from etc.

Thought so because its what we refer to them as in engineering studies, mainly for the differences in bond strength between thermopolymers and thermoset polymers.
