hey guys! theres this assignment due and like i was getting a little confused with what it was actually asking i emailed eugene with a lengthy email but he gave me back a reply of;
"n=10" "n=40"
which is the shortest email in my life and means nothing to me

the question is
An educational psychologist interested in the effectiveness of 4 different learning strategies devises an experiment where 10 students are randomly chosen from classes using each of the 4 strategies (A, B, C and D). A standardised test is performed to assess performance over 3 content areas, each of which is assessed out of a possible 100. Total scores for each student using are calculated and are presented below:

Perform a one-way between groups ANOVA on the data using SPSS. In answering the questions below, you should cut and paste the SPSS output where appropriate.

The question says "where 10 students are randomly chosen from classes using each of the 4 strategies (A, B, C and D)".
However with how the data is set out (in the table) and the question asked "Perform a one-way between groups ANOVA", i was unsure as to whether it was;
10 students who each do strategies a,b,c,d.
Or
40 students who were chosen from classes using the strategies a,b,c,d. i.e. 10 students do strategy a, 10 students category b, etc.

Does anyone get what im asking? or can someone explain to me what it's asking cause its yea a little confusing

errm i sort of know what your asking... have u put the data into SPSS yet?

What its pretty much saying is your first guess... 10 students repeated measures design where each of those 10 students goes througuh each type of learning strategy.

However when you put it into SPSS, from what i can remember.. from what i did since i did the assignment ages ago and i handed it a few days ago.

You do two columns

one with strategy type and one with score, then voila put in the right syntax or use the point and click method and you should be right

so in strategy type you'de put

in one column and then the next column you'de put score corresponding to the strategy type

im sorta lost
how i did it so far (which im not sure is correct) is;
i set labels ie. 1=a 2=b 3=c 4=d
then in the table i did
student strategy score
1 1
1 2
1 3
1 4
2 1
2 2
2 3
2 4
etc

is that the right way? or am i going about it totally wrong?
should it be

urrm i don't think you need three variables its not like your going to use the third one in ur syntax. I could be wrong. but you labeling the strategies sounds good... but you should do it like

strategy score
1 36.02

(so that reaches 40 observations) with 40 scores

10 observations in each strategy group

hi clairegirl and boink boink,

seems we're all having no fun with assignment 2....if it's any consolation to you guys, it took me 2.5 hours to get my head around using SPSS :( i just had no idea for ages!

thankfully now i've managed to answer questions 1,2 and 5 but am a little lost of questions 3 and 4 and the MQ discussion board is a bit confusing....i'm thinking we do a contrast of the mean of A and D as they're the smallest pair-wise comparison then maybe we should compare (A and D) to (B and C)....am I on the right track?

please help before i tear my hair out....i know it's only worth 10 marks but i really need them! thanks :)

yeah you sound like your on the right track.. well it sounds like what i did anywho.. from what i can remember
