Current research has aimmed to increase o2 capacity of the blood. So far there are very limited success. some reasearch evolved the extraction of pure haemonglobin and use of perfluoro compounds

research into artificially made blood is needed because there is a shortage of donated blood, and demands are rising. and also artificially made blood:
1. does not need to be cross match thus can be delived to patients quickly.
2. does not have the risk of spreading diseases such as AIDS.
3. can be stored and transported easily.
4. can be made in large quantities and could always be available.

I would research perfluorocarbons (PFC's), plasma expanders, and also an artificial blood product called "MP4" (contains polyethylene glycol - heaps of info on it @ newscientist.com).

I don't they have yet developed a whole blood substitute, only artificial blood components.

Also see if you can find anything on ESC (Embryonic Stem Cell) lines, which are taken and enucleated. From this, they can then be specialised into RBC's (again, might find some of this @ new scientist website)

Uh, do your own research? I'm sure you can spare five minutes of Googling.
