if i came first in my assessment rank at my school but stuffed up in the hsc, does that mean that i 'steal' the person who came first in the hsc's mark??

you'll get the mark of the person who came first in the HSC as you assesment mark, but you will keep your own HSC exam mark. Your final HSC mark is determined by taking the average of the two (assesment mark and HSC exam mark)

EDIT: made it a bit clearer, i think

ummmmmmmmmmmm i don't think so, that'd be abit unfair don't you think? more likely they'd average it out, they take half you assessment mark and half your hsc mark to get a UAI.

assuming your first: you dont steal anything! if someone gets 100 in their hsc, you get their HSC mark as your assessment mark, if you bomb out in the hsc and get 20%, you get 20% as your exam mark and 100 as your asessessment mark then you'd end up getting 75 overall, where as the other person will have 100% in their HSC mark and lets estimate 70 for their assessment mark and have 85 hsc mark!!

guess who's better off

I am pretty sure if someone beats u when u came first in assesment u get there exam mark if it is better than what u already had but the exam mark dont change but i bet they would scale it up so there is only like 2 marks different even if they say they ddint. my brother had only one mark difference or the same for his exam and assesment for all his subjects and i would doubt if u would get that close in every exam

yeah i think it isnt a myth, well hope not cos im ranked 1st in 3 subjects...
but anyways, what that last guy was saying i think/hope is true... cos you always see exam marks near the assessment marks..
now my english assessment mark is 85.. and i KNOW i can not get 85 in these two papers.. yet i ranked 1st, so it will be interesting to see what my exam mark turns out to be :) i really hope that they do scale it up to limit standard variation between marks and keeps me above 80.. but who knows..

cant we ask someone at BOS or UAC :S

Its no myth, its all laid out by the board
If you come first, the marks are moderated so that the highest HSC mark in the class/grade becomes the highest assessment mark in that class/grade. For example lets say my exam mark was 94, I came first in the class in assessments, and I also came first in the class in the HSC exam. That means that my HSC Mark and Assessment mark are both 94.

If someone beats me from my class in the actual HSC exam, then I get to keep their HSC exam mark as the top assessment mark - be it higher or lower than my original assessment mark sent in by the school. E.g lets say the highest mark by anyone from the class in the actual HSC exam eas 85 - that means that teh person ranked first would get that mark as their assessment mark, and everyone elses's assessment mark would be dragged down accordingly -> because the school marks easy.

The system is totally fair if you think about it, because they want to reward the people who work hard throughout the year to obtain teh first rank, and also reward the people who do well in the actual exam (because, no matter what, you keep your HSC exam mark).

The UAI is calculated by UAC and thats a totally different story.

So if I get 90 for internal then 70 for external. Someone beats me with 75 for external so my internal goes down to 75!!!
I end up with 75 internal and 70 external???

But then the person's internal is, say 85 and external is 75. Or does their internal go down- maybe to 70? Is that how it works?

if the HIGHEST mark from ur class is indeed 75 for external, then yes, ur assessment mark becomes 75

And your external stays at 70

The second scenario is also true - their assessment mark is moderated down, so that its below your assessment mark, to preserve the rankings. But, they keep their external mark.
