According to the Board of Studies a subject is defined as:
The general name given to an area of study; a subject may offer one or more courses.
i.e.
There is a wide variety of subjects to choose from for the Higher School Certificate, with about 150 Board Developed Courses and a large range of Board Endorsed Courses. English, Mathematics, History, Studies of Religion, Music, VET frameworks and some languages are subjects that offer more than one course. The other subjects each offer one 2 unit course.

According to the Board of Studies in order to be eligible for the Higher School Certificate you must satisfactorily complete at least 12 units in your Preliminary study pattern and at least 10 units in your HSC study pattern.
Both study patterns must include:
- at least six units of Board Developed Courses
- at least two units of a Board Developed Course in English
- at least three courses of 2 unit value or greater
- at least four subjects

The "at least four subjects" point kind of concerns me. I do English (3U), Mathematics (3U) and Science (6U) as my subjects for Year 11. That means 3 subjects. Does that mean I'm not eligible for the Higher School Certificate? :0
Or is it just a typo that was meant to say "at least four different courses"?

trebla, your subject combination is a very common one. if they counted all science courses as one subject, a lot of people would have been stuffed with their choices.

i wanted to do 3u music, 4u english and 3u maths. Wasn't allowed...

So i decided to drop maths altogether and take visual art and ees, which was the best decision I've ever made.

if this is correct, then the Board has contradicted itself by saying you have to include "at least four subjects"

There is no such thing as "Science" (as such) in Stage 6.

Chemistry, Physics, etc. are all different subjects.

All courses within subjects have the name of the subject in it. Thus, General Mathematics, Mathematics, Mathematics Extension 1, Mathematics Extension 2 are all part of the mathematics subject.

You should be notified by your school if your pattern of study is inadequate, so don't worry about that.

I haven't been notified of my inadequate study pattern!
