u should never say your own opinion in an essay, (ie. cant say i or me)

let your poems and related material do the explaining, but u can do stuff like define consumerism and talk about consumerism in general, but never use your opinion, (eg. never say "I believe" cant be personal, instead say, "one would believe")

u can actually
some questions can tie u into given a personal opinion
my eng teacher (and she's an examiner) said they accept that sort of structure

well, this kind of and kind of doesn't relate to this thread....

for some modules - like Donne - they can ask you to write about your personal responses - in this case to the poetry

.....with regard to consumerism - i guess they could ask you, or it could be incorporated into the question, like i think ive seen a paper somewhere that said something about your perceptions of change being influenced by the texts - could be specimen or last years hsc?? - so thats possible as well...

Well, while we're here...

You can state your own opinion (they do this in Uni english essays all the time), but if you feel uncomfortable, don't. Alternatively, use terms like "one thinks" or "the audience is likely to...." etc
