have you applied to B+G yet? hope demand for Burgmann isn't too high cos I haven't gotten round to applying yet. yea I saw the B+G website and it looks nice, but too bad I can't really cook!
i heard that the ANU has quite a strong law faculty, and that it also has a good law library.. if you're interested in asian studies, the National Library is meant to have an extensive collection of materials on that topic...

yeh.. i went down to the open day just after the trials... and the law faculty is really strong in international relations (due to the close proximity to all the foreign embassies and whatnot) and public law (because canberra's the center for australian politics).
But one thing that really impressed me was that they hav somewhat of an emphasis on research (because it used to be only a post-grad uni). So this allows you to do things like internships at parliament house, high court or lobby groups and that goes towards credit points for the course.
I haven't applied for accommodation yet... i still have to get people to fill out the reference part. But we've got until january or something, so there's no real rush.

yeh the ANU is recognised as the best research uni in Australia and Asia (according to rankings in 2000). So this would really help you if you wanted to do honours (which I hope to do). There are also MANY people there paid purely to do research, so you'll have access to the best experts. I'm impressed with how much the ANU has achieved in such a short time. It'll be interesting to see where it'll be in a few years time. I think that I might choose the ANU over U syd and UNSW. They don't seem to be any better than the ANU. For me, the ANU has more to offer.
as for accomodation, I think the deadline is early February 2003.
what's the campus like? is it nice? i heard the law library had a nice courtyard out the front

ANU use to be 100% research uni, but if the govt get there away (according to Canberra newspaper), ANU will lose the undergraduate and give it to the University of Canberra so ANU can concentrate on Post grad.
googy, i wrote to the them.. this is their response..
No, the message is not entirely true. Yes, was originally established as a research only university to further Australia's research base. In the 1960s it extended to take undergraduates, however we still only have a small base of undergraduates; about 9,000 students.
The message is false about ANU intends to concentrate on postgraduate. There is no such plan.
I hope this clears up the ambiguity.

Hmm... the only thing i noticed from that was the overuse of the word 'should'. It reads like Mr Patience is just bitter and twisted because he was stuck at UC doing a bachelor of arts. I wouldn't worry about it... I would say with all due respect to Mr Patience, writing about personal gripes only pisses off the community even more when that turns out wrong and unattainable.

i'm thinking about doing Art/Science at ANU. Doing biotechnology for the science, and a spanish and something else like politics or maybe archaeology (just for fun). Does anyone know how ANU comes up against USYD and UNSW in the science dept?

well they hav a fair few on-site scientific research facilities (i think like CSIRO and whatnot). That's about the extent of wot i know cos i didn't really go to any science talks...
but i guess you'd hav to think that they would be pretty strong in the scientific research department if they hav different research facilities on-site.

Choice of university comes down to a lot of different factors. Personally I think that the ANU offered me as much or more than any other university in Australia would have done. In particular, I wanted to do a general Science degree, which isn't possible at a lot of other universities. I wasn't sure exactly what subjects I wanted to study when I did my HSC, although I knew it was something to do with science. Doing a BSc meant that I did maths, physics, chemistry, biology, astronomy..., and could therefore keep my options open. It was lucky I did because when I first went to Uni I thought I wanted to be a mathematician - no way now!! As far as I'm concerned, that's the big draw-back with most other universities; their courses are too specialised. Having said that, the ANU is brilliant for research, so when you do decide what subject you want to specialise in, there are lots of facilities available. The presence of the Research Schools means that there are a lot of experts available; more so than you would otherwise think.
"One of the advantages of the ANU is that there are somewhat fewer students, so you can usually get more attention from the lecturers / tutors. And it doesn't mean that they are worse quality. In fact, due to the presence of the Research Schools there is actually a much larger pool of lecturers available than you would find at a similar-sized university elsewhere; there's lots of people that are paid purely to perform research, but want to have some teaching experience. That's a great opportunity to have classes in the most exciting subjects of the time, by the leading experts.
i couldn't decide b/w ANU, USYD and UNSW, but now i think that i'm going to choose the ANU over USYD and UNSW b/c it has more to offer me. in the Asia Week Magazine, they ranked the ANU as 8th in Asia (1st in Aus) overall. here's the link.. http://www.asiaweek.com/asiaweek/features/universities2000/schools/multi.overall you can view ranks according to funding, citations in journals etc.. (it's yr 2000, but it's still useful info)
in terms of research, no other Australian uni can really compare. ANu undoubtedly is the most research oriented uni in Aus, and their professors have won 3 Nobel prizes for their research (which is remarkable considering that the ANU hasn't been around as long as USYD)

not to mention the fact that it's the only university in australia with links to both oxford and cambridge which is pretty damn impressive. So in your third year (if you're doing a 5 year degree) you could possibly go to either one and then you could always say "and i went to oxford" and that would impress the hell out of anyone!! haha
