B arts/psychology means UNEMPLOYMENT, true or false? (1 Viewer)

I know it's a little too late to ask, but seriously;

The thing is, I don't want to waste 4 years of my life doing a uni degree that won't even get me a decent job. I've already wasted one year. I know heaps of people who drop out in their 3rd year because it's too difficult, and people who graduate but end up working in lame retail stores.

though I have talked to a few psychologists who did their masters @ uni and now have wonderful jobs......but they're old.

it's all about what you make of it. work hard, get into honours if you can, distinguish yourself from everyone else. There'll be a job out there waiting for you somewhere.

You can buy BA degrees in that vending machine that sells water down by the student centre.

The degree on its own wont get you a job. Do well in class, get at least AT LEAST BARE MINIMUM credit average.
Distinguish yourself in various ways, help out at mission Australia or kids help line or something. Ask around and call people to try and get connections in the industry and try and get a job hooked up by the time you start 3rd year. If you can, get involved in a research project at uni and get to know the important people who run it.

Psychology is a pretty big area, it isnt just counseling[and even that is a big area, liek specialise with kids or middle aged women or whatever, ADHD specialist etc etc] so try and work out what area you want to go into and get your shit set up now.

Maybe 1/4 of people who start psych in first year end up getting a job out of it/ doing honours. 1/2 of those people who dont because all they have is a degree with some average marks, no extra curricular stuff and no contacts.

TLDR: degree on its own is worthless, do some other stuff and network to get a job.

Because at the time I didn't know what I wanted to do (I'm still in the process of finding out) and it offered me a 'broad, liberal education'. A sampling of a variety of subjects and that appealed to me.

if I don't get into honors (which I probably won't), I'll just do a one year psych diploma course @ uni and then complete two years of unpaid work experience.....ONLY then will I be able to get a decent job.

oeh and I'm thinking of working for a counselling-related organisations like kids help line or life line, just because it would look good on my resume.

Yea you should definately start doing volunteer work, that's what I did for about 3 years (you can usually do something ridiculous like 1 day every 2 weeks lol) and it helped me secure a proper internship.

lol, once every two weeks? that's fucking awesome because that way I can get some work experience and still have plenty of time to study. I hope it's not that hard to join lifeline/the kids help line......or even work for the army etc

but wouldn't it be a bonus if both my husband and I had well-paid jobs? I don't plan on being a typical housewife. kthnx.
