Hello, I am a recent HSC graduate interested in pursuing a commerce related job (accounting/finance) in the future but have a personal interest in psychology. I have done some research on how I can study psych and commerce together and have looked at the options of studying psych through general education studies while doing a commerce degree or combining a commerce degree with arts/soc sci/sci but there are still many questions that I have yet to find an answer to. It would be appreciated if you can answer some of the questions outlined below regarding this matter.
· * I do not require official qualifications or recognition for psychology as I do not intend to pursue a career related to psych (unless I become significantly more attractive to employers of accounting/finance jobs if I get those qualifications/recognition, but is that the case?)
· * I have looked at the UNSW handbook but single degrees only offer 12 general studies units, and out of all the general studies units there are 21 units which I am interested in studying. I can consider leaving 9 units out, but how do psychology related general studies courses compare to a major in psychology (through arts/social science/sci, not B Psych) in relation to depth and understanding psych concepts?
· * What’s the difference between B Comm/Arts, B Comm/Social Science, B Comm/Science if I intend to major in psychology and primarily focus on psychology for my non-business related degree?
· * Since I can only have one single commerce-related major with B Comm/Sci, does that make me LESS employable for accounting/finance related jobs? I understand that majoring in maths or something with my science degree will help with those types of jobs but I am solely interested in psychology for the science component of my degree and I’m not really interested in HR or marketing related jobs. Does doing something like B Commerce (Accounting)/B Science (Psychology) make me less employable for accounting/finance related jobs because I have less qualifications due to only having one commerce major?
* Also, I really hate sciences like physics/chem and have had difficulty grasping phys/chem. concepts in high school, will I have to do non-psych related science subjects if I do B Comm/Sci? Am I likely to have difficulty grasping psych concepts also if I struggled with phys/chem. in high school?
· * Another problem is that with a UAI of 92.9 , I probably narrowly missed out on getting straight into B Comm at UNSW. Is it harder to transfer to B Comm/Sci or B Comm with B Eco/Sci, B Eco/Arts or B Eco/Soc Sci than B Eco alone? (As in are the subjects generally considered harder thus making it harder to adequate marks for transfer)
· * In high school, I have had difficulty grasping science concepts and disliked subjects such as english, history or geography but find business/eco related concepts interesting, easy to understand and straightforward, My maths also isn’t bad and I don’t mind it although I don’t have a deep interest in it. That being said, and after considering all the above, what option do you recommend I take? Thank you for your time, I think this is definitely my longest post yet! :O
