Hey guys,

I've done a lot of research between the two, including similar threads on this site but they were quite outdated - I'm curious if anyone knows, perhaps from personal experience what the actual difference is between Commerce and Economics in terms of the course at UNSW and whether it is better to do Economics or Commerce. I'm not looking to specialise in quantitative subjects like finance or econometrics, but I really did enjoy economics as a subject in the HSC. I was perhaps looking into something like human resource management as a major.

Thanks!

Economics in itself is a quantitative field.

HSC Economics is not a good primer for university economics.

If you do Economics degree you will need one major to be economics,so I suggest commerce,as you can choose less quantitative majors.

Hypothetically if I chose to do comm (liberal studies), could I only do the majors in the comm. degree, ie nothing outside the field? Because at this stage im planning to do acc./finance, however I want the flexibility in case I choose to do something else not within the business faculty as a major.

I think for liberal you have to choose one ASB major and then you have to also choose one outside of it (which is either humanities, languages or science). That means you can't do Accounting/Finance you can do Accounting or Finance+outside of it major.

Honestly you still have electives when you do a normal B.comm degree and that might be enough to satisfy your needs. Alot of the liberal study majors are in my opinion just 'fun' majors which won't really compliment your comm or aren't really useful to getting a job. You can instead pick up a second degree and drop one B.comm major if you want to choose something else(and then you are also not limited to certain fields of the liberal degree choice) as another option

Just a heads up... Commerce (Liberal Studies) I believe is no longer offered at UNSW.
