I am really tossing up between these two courses (BTW, both courses are at Griffith). I’m just having trouble finding out what kind of career options the courses with offer me. They both sound good to me, but I don’t want to end up with some lousy job as a lab assistant or medical sales rep. So, how about I tell you what interests me and you offer your opinion on what course would be best:

- The diagnosis and treatment of disease
- Immunology and genetics
- Finding cures for many growing heath problems, diseases, disorders, etc…
- Money also interests me, but I would rather have an interesting and fulfilling career. But yes, money is important too.

I’m not really interested in the whole social, community, dealing with poor underprivileged people, health care center type job.

If anyone knows anything about what these two courses are like, and what options they offer me, your advice is much appreciated.

Cheers. :)

It looks like you should to do Science Advanced course because you wouldn't be able to diagnose disease, etc in people only doctors can formally do that.

Immunology and genetics are in many med sci courses, some uni's run specific genetics majors in sciences courses im not sure about Griffith though, but they should esp when they have medicine.

Finding cures for many growing heath problems, diseases, disorders, etc… There are two mainstream methods into this either doing medicine and pathology which is the old route or getting an Sci ADV or Med Sci degree or any other sci degree and doing masters, and then a research P.H.D. sounds harsh but this is the only way many big companys will even consider to employ you and give hundreds of thousands in funding on expensive research, it's hard to break into this my friend has gone back to uni to do masters coz he couldnt do any of that and was treated like a lab assistant testing samples for many companies and researchers.

I think it's best to contact the course co-ordinators at Griffith and ask them what backgrounds they are from to get an idea of the opportunities that certain degrees, majors and pathways entail.

Not a people person hey, what's the point of researching to find a cure for human diseases when you don't like those who are suffering from them.

Hmm, biotech and nanotech, however at some uni's biotech has alot to do with robotics, some research, etc

Biotechnology (which is awesome because biotechnologists do it better) can lead you into a career into research. Essentially I think thats what you mean when you say you want to find cures, treat disease, etc.

On the flipside, there isn't a whole heap of money in biotechnology yet because it's still a young industry in Aus. That said if you get into the top of your field you'll probably meet some $$$.

Also on the upside, biotechnology isn't people orientated. There are plenty of jobs that do not involve social interaction with the general public. I hate people too.

I'll find some links later to biotech jobs. :)
