Hello guys,

I have set this thread up for bachelor of science/engineering students.

I would like to hear what majors you guys are considering? What subjects you guys are doing? and what further degrees (and career paths) you guys are planning?

The majors that interest me are: Physics, Mathematical Physics, Mathematics and Statistics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

I am certain that I want to do a graduate degree! If I pursue physics it would be a PhD or if engineering it would be the masters degree offered. If I choose mathematics it may be a range of things (PhD).

Becoming a professor in one of these areas is something I would like to consider doing aswell (Even though I'm not a prodogy in these areas I love to discuss ideas in these areas).

So what are you guys planning to obtain through this degree?

I'm doing BE and I've only ever considered one major - Chemical. So far for semester one: Calculus 2, ESD 1, Italian A, Chemistry 1. For semester two: Linear Algebra, ESD 2, Italian B(maybe), Chemistry 2.

Doubt I would be pursuing post grad, but that might change later on. Could you imagine an Engineering course in MIT?!. Hopefully I can find good employment here, if not I will most likely move over seas.

Accepted into a Bachelor Engineering at Uni of Syd and Uni of Melb.. deffered both positions for a year, as i am currently working under a civil engineer on the Hume highway.. so its a great experience where im gaining first hand experience and conversing with clients and people from related occupations (surveying-geomatic engineering). Its really good, cause i received a scholarship with ABigroup, which gives me $x amount of dollars a fortnight, but also i get a reserved position to work for them during my Uni holidays. Most likely going to specialise in civil(obviously). Im a VERY maths/science person so will probably choose subjects that inhabit those fields. I will have to look into breadth subjects and everything more before Semester 1, 2010. Goodluck to all, hope to meet u all when i move to Melbourne.

Good work getting to actually 'see' what a civil engineer does (And you get money aswell )! When you go to do your degree you will have a fair bit of knowledge as to what engineers do. Good luck with your work-experience and I really do hope you enjoy it!

Sup Joel, I'm guessing you're the same guy off the engineering board on the LMS haha.

I'm currently in chemistry, but still not 100% sure whether I want to be a chemical engineer, or an electrical engineer...so I'll see how it goes.

I'm in Calculus 2, Finance 1, ESD 1 and Chemistry 1.

Does anyone know which subjects have compulsory tutorials? I know ESD workshops and chem pracs are compulsory but want to know which tutorials are, I'll most likely go to all of them, but I'll be sure to never miss any if I know it's compulsory

Oh also anyone have the calculus 2 past exams or formula sheet? I can't find them.

Bachelor of Engineering for me. Can't see myself wanting to do postgraduate studies. Plus I'm applying for an undergraduate scholarship in which a Bachelor of Engineering is mandatory. Will most likely major in Civil Engineering.

Because 2010 is the last year for first year student's studying Bachelor of Engineering, will the course be affected much?

I didn't know this post existed. So heres my somewhat late "plan"
I'm going into my second year in 2010.

I'm planning on majoring in computer science

with the concurrent diploma in mathematical sciences,

Diploma in Mathematical Sciences

(in discrete maths and operations research)
Discrete Maths & Ops Research

which is basically just a double major in computer science and maths. I'm doing 3 maths subjects, 3 computer science subjects and 2 philosophy subjects (as breadth) in 2010. Subjects are: Real Analysis(maths), Probability(maths), Programming the Machine(computer science) and Logic: language and information (philosophy) in first semester and Discrete maths and Operations Research (maths), Algorithms and Data Structures (computer science), Discrete structures (computer science) and Knowledge and the nature of reality (philosophy) in second semester.

In my 3rd year I am planning to do:
Complex Analysis (maths), Graph Theory (maths), Operating systems and network services (computer science), declarative programming (computer science) and in second semester: Discrete Mathematics (maths), Decision making (maths), Computer Science project (computer science), Theoretical Computer Science (computer science). I will probably fit in the extra two breadth I will need to do in either the summer semester next year, the summer semester the year after or both.

Plans start to get a little less clear after 3rd year. I am probably going to do an honours year, either in computer science or maths. You do 5 subjects and a research project, and you can substitute up to 2 subjects for ones in similar departments, so I'll probably be doing computer science with 2 maths subjects or maths with 2 computer science subjects. Subjects like Machine Learning from the computer science department and Data Mining or Network Optimisation from the maths department look like good choices for me, but I have a long time to wait until then, and it will probably all change by then any way...
