I've dead set decided to do networking for my IT major but I'm not quite sure what business major is a good mix with networking. I have thought of doing banking for network security with banks and I could work some where in that field though banking is abit narrow as banking to me means jobs related to banks and banks only. Other majors I would consider are accounting, finance and marketing and the rest of the other majors I wouldn't consider doing except e-commerce however heard from people that it isn't really a good area to study. So need some help with deciding which major would be a good mix with networking, providing some examples of occupations are also good indications of what I might see in the future. Though I'm interested in network management and security as a job maybe that would give you guys a better idea of possible mixes.

I am in a similar predicament, I have no idea which business major would go well with the IT majors. I am interested in economics but are there any IT majors that will go well with it?

Instead of thinking what business major would mix, think of which major would interest you? Pretty much every major will have some link to computing.

In your first and second year of BBus/BScIT, you do 8 core business subjects which are listed here: http://handbook.uts.edu.au/directory/stm90273.html
All of them will give you a taste of what to expect in the major e.g. you do a subject called Fundamentals of Business Finance, and if you enjoy it, you could consider a Finance major.

Would you predict the UAI cutoff of this course and BScit go down a point or 2 or even remain the same? I'm asking this because now that the Government has scrapped DFEE, there has been more CSP places available for university courses. This, assuming that the supply and demand for the 2 courses remained the same. I noticed the BBus/Bscit creapt up by 1 uai point from 2006 --> 2007 ...:\

I couldn't say.

People are still using the BBus/BScIT route to get into City Business with a lower UAI (via an internal transfer) and UTS also offered 5 bonus points to students scoring high marks in certain subjects (http://datasearch.uts.edu.au/study/hscbonus-cal.cfm), all of which could mean an increase in UAI cutoffs.

I have no idea what effect the scrapping of DFEE will do the the cutoff though. Honestly, I don't know anyone currently doing BBus/BScIT who is DFEE'ing.

How good is the Accounting major you are doing at the moment? Is it all just theory and you take summer internships. Finance & Banking also seem to appeal to me :|

It is great!
The Accounting major at UTS is extremely practical, and not just all theory.
I took a summer internship last year, and now I'm working in an accounting firm part time.

I'm looking into some areas of IT Risk and Security which accounting firms offer, so that I can incorporate the knowledge I have gained in both fields.
That is the great thing about this course- you can specialise in either field or even both.

Never thought comp networking (IT security and firewalls...etc) would work well with a major like accounting compared to with 'Business Information Systems Management' or is it equal job prospects. I like the IT paths of being related to networking or business info analyst as well as accounting so yeah...Don't know which one would be perfect to complement accounting.

The accounting firms, especially EY are now bundling their original services of financial audits with advisory services such as technology and security risk which would make some knowledge of networking very useful.

You pretty much can't go wrong with either the Business Information Systems or the Internetworking and Applications Major with the Accounting Major.

I guess you will find out what you prefer better when you start completing core computing subjects.

Cool that sounds great! Only thing that may sway me away from Internetworking and Applications is the amount of programming involved. I'm not too fond with it as i have experienced during my Software Design and Development Classes in which the teacher has no clue how to teach however i did do well in my programming project getting 18/20 as i enjoy analysing programming code rather than actually build it up from scratch. Anywayz, might not end up making it into the double degree cutoff so might have to resort to getting into B Science in IT do both those majors :|. BTW, Is the core subject 'Programming Fundamentals' hard with exam and project work?

You might want to ask someone who has done it more recently lol.
When I did it back in 2006, it was called 'Object-Oriented Programming'. The project work was making tetris in java and the final exam was all multiple choice.

I'm not too good at programming either, but I pulled off a Distinction in OOP. I've heard it has got a bit harder though nowdays.

Btw, What makes the UTS networking major better than other unis such as UNSW or usyd other than the fact that UTS only has a official Cisco training lab within the uni? Are the IT security topics such as proxies, firewalls featured quite a lot?..:\

Great staff, industry links and research.

You would touch on a bit of security in the CCNA subjects, but most of the IT security stuff is done in Network Security (31252, http://handbook.uts.edu.au/subjects/31252.html). Network Security is a subject that is part of the Internetworking and Applications Major.

I can't tell you what Network Security is like though, I don't plan to do it until the end of next year (I think).

I am doing programming fundamentals and I would say if you have some previous knowledge about programming, like concepts about selection statements and repetition statements , you wont suffer much. I didnt even study this subject so far and got 16/20 from the assignment even though the marking was very harsh. Just remember,programming is a skill that can be attained at home after weeks hard work and motivation.
