Well half way through a masters looking at learning and teaching. Thats how I know that many peole underachieve for a variety of reasons. The UAI is not an efficient predictor.

uai is a very good measure... i understand wat ur saying about how some are more naturally able than others but that doesn't mean anything... its like having a powerful engine in ur car, but never ever going over 60km/h... no matter hu u are u have to work, ull have to work less if ur smarter and that less work will be more productive than a less intelligent person...

so y do u say its not a good measure... it measures commitment, desire... how badly a person wants to be something... im sure there are builders out there hu dropped out in yr 10 with the ability of anything, i got a selective school... there are loads of these people roaming around... but u dunt feel sorry for them... u pitty them... they could be big people... but they just dunt care.. they wanna go out and get drunk every night of the week... some try to care, but get riduclued by their dumb cunt friends...
they'll never really change... until they absoultely need too... so it is a perfect measure... how can u complain? i just dont see it :S - no offence intended

anyway, flyer... acturial studies is probably the only exception ? wouldnt u agree? and other HIGHLY specialist fields... acccounting at UNSW has a cut-off of 96 but ims ure sum1 with 80 could achieve satisfactorilly in it...

so im still confused to y u said that remark so early in the thread :S but anyway, im over it...

uai is a measure of ones readiness to work and IF they have the ability to cope with the amount of work...
it will really depend on the course to c if the uai is necessary...
eg...aviation imo should not require a uai...but it does ...low 80's..

also, i think that nursing has a ridiculously low uai..(IMO anywayz)
but the uai is necessary to stabalise the overdemand or low demand to find an equilibrium

aditya, I'm sure Actuarial isn't the only one.

However someone with a UAI of 80 mightn't fair well in comparison to a group of people who all have at least 96. There is a reasonable gap, which will show in the grades awarded.

I mentioned that so early, because I agreed with your statement to a certain extent. And I just wanted to make my point.

As a side note, Law at USyd and UNSW would also be an interesting case. In so far as people who obtained a UAI of 90 could manage, but they might only achieve Passes because they are competiting with a large number with over 99 UAIs.

---------
As a side note: in Actuarial Studies at Macquarie, a comparatively low UAI doesn't mean you can't do well.

I don't know. It's difficult. And my mind still feels fried, atm. Can't think properly. Losing too many more brain cells than nature intended. Otherwise, it's good.

Lots of words, lots of talk about engines and how good we all are no compassion, no understanding of how people learn, why people learn, when people learn

If you knew you would agree that the UAI is not a good predictor.
