so i am car hunting, and i have next to no idea with cars. what do you guys recommend for under $5k? preferably low mileage (under 100km) and less than a 2L engine and a sedan.

thanks in advance

Oh it's you.

Firstly you will not get anything under 100km for $5000. I'll assume you are talking about 100,000km.

But honestly, for $5k, realistically you'd be looking at cars which have around 160,000-220,000kms.. and if it has around 110,000kms [or less] done, you'd get a 15-30yr old car.

You lose some, you gain some.

Since you have no idea with cars I'm assuming you drive an auto.. which will also be relatively harder to find if you're looking for an old car with a small engine..

Honestly, I think you've set your criteria too high for $5000.. unless you have a family friend, or a friend selling their box.. then you got a deal..

For $5k I could of bought an old Pulsar sedan, manual.. one owner.. off a family friend..

Didnt Legham or someone score a really good deal and got an Audi A4 for around $8k?

Then my friend scored a Prelude VTi-R for $10k

And another person I know scored a Celica ZR for $12k off this guy.. but then again, his brother bought a Porsche off the same guy.. so a discount only seemed fair..

I thought you were an Evo driver.

Back on topic, yeh I think $5k or even $8k is pushing your luck.

SsangYong is a Korean car company that has majority shareholding with a Chinese firm. They use outdated technology from Mercedes Benz as part of their contract. They also design some of the ugliest cars. Examples include Stavic and Kyron (sp?).

let's just remember nothing good (in terms of products) comes out of china.

which make and model is best in terms of value for money? again, the lower the price, the better.

since even $10k isn't going to get me a decent 2nd hand car, i am looking at a $10k-$15k new car. any suggestions people?

Nope, you'd be looking at even around $20k for a Suzuki Swift.. to get on the road that is.. oh wait.. my friend bought that in manual.. add another 2k

Or you could get a base model Honda Jazz..

Toyota Yaris maybe.. but I dont really like that car..

If you want to spend $10-15k, you could get an almost new 2nd hand car..

Buying a new car is silly for that price.
Buy something with less than 50,000kms in a recent model.
Much better value for money.

2nd hand Mazda2 can be picked up 4 round dat price. only 1.5L engine, but its very light and decently quick. old silvias/200sx and 1980s 3 series beemers are also 2L and round dat price.

lancers round the 1995 model have a market value around the 5K mark. of course, you're looking at mileage of 150-200K on em (heck, my 97 is climbing to the 300K mark- obviously an ex-work car) but they are 1.5L and perform better than quite a few stock cars of their year. and the smaller engine means you will get better economy out of your auto.

though to be honest, my 95 auto corolla does 360-380 per tank while my manual lancer does 320-360. but i reckon the lancer has a smaller tank, that is the only way. i think....

no offence but there are a lot better cars than an evo to spend sixty thousand on.
