You don't have much of a choice. For under $1000 you are going to get the most basic of configurations. You're probably looking at 512mb RAM shared with graphics and about a 60gig hard drive. Battery life should be reasonable since it won't be powerful. I'd check out Dell first they are usually the cheapest.

also CSI:crimes, if youre only using it for uni, ie word processing and internet, then you should fine a few products thats under $1000 pretty easily

Making a guess based on your post I would say something under $1000 should be fine for anything you want to use it for.

Batterywise, the average goes for about 2 hours, since with your budget you'll probably end up with a celeron processor or equivalent. My Acer's got a battery that goes for 3 hours. So definitely consider looking at those. You can probably get better, but then you'll have to sacrafice a bit of everything else RAM, HD. Also look at stock-clearance retail catologues like DSE. You'll probably get a good deal with the summer sales and cash-back promotions.

^ You have got it pretty right.

With a laptop you really are much better off to keep on saving your money and by a better more expensive one that will last you longer then get something with not such a high specs now.
