what actual importance does shakespeare have in our current society, honestly? just because his works are part of the syllabus doesnt mean that he actually has significance to us. and saying your point of view still can be fighting a losing battle. most people do have to study his work but i really have grown to appreciate it. just because you dont get him doesnt mean that you cant appreciate him. i think that having an openmind about things brings out a lot more enjoyable experiences in life. i mean, if i decided that i would despise shakespeare just because i had to write an essay, then i dont think i would enjoy much in life =/

-Allen Ginsberg, 'America'.

Anything that dies has had some kind of aim in life, some
kind of activity, which has worn out; but that does not apply to Odradek.
Am I to suppose, then, that he will always be rolling down the stairs, with
ends of thread trailing after him, right before the feet of my children,
and my children's children? He does no harm to anyone that one can see; but
the idea that he is likely to survive me I find almost painful.

Be a worldchild, form a circle, before we all go under-Thom Yorke, 'Street Spirit (Fadeout)'
♥. America is one of my favourite Ginsberg poems.

Youve sinned, I suppose, but your punishment has been out of all proportion. They have turned you into something other than a human being. You have no power of choice any longer. You are committed to socially acceptable acts, a little machine capable only of good. And I see that clearly that business about the marginal conditionings. Music and the sexual act, literature and art, all must be a source now not of pleasure but of pain.
Thats right, sir, I said, smoking one of this kind mans cork-tipped cancers.
They always bite off too much, he said, drying a plate like absentmindedly. But the essential intention is the real sin. A man who cannot choose ceases to be a man.
- "A Clockwork Orange", Anthony Burgess

she said: "Eh, I know you and you cannot sing"
I said: "that's nothing - you should hear me play piano"
- "The Queen is Dead", the Smiths

Despair seeps through and cuts our eyes
Unified collapse of everything inside
We understand but can't accept
We are not dead cos we hate
- "Love's Sweet Exile", Manic Street Preachers

Are you gonna liberate us girls from male white corporate oppression?
- "Kool Thing", Sonic Youth

Morrissey is so quotable.

If you think I'm a little strange, well thats because I am

While others conquered love, I sat back in my room and drew up a plan

No I've never had a job, because I've never wanted one

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour, but heaven knows I'm miserable now

If you write poetry, than the words that you write should be your own, don't plagarise, steal or take or loan, or someone with a big nose, who knows, will trip you up and laugh when you fall

Among others.

As for Shakespeare, I'd say he remains relevant because the stories he adapted (in most cases) are ones that are universially relevant, to a multitude of differing audiences..This is very apparent with King Lear, with the presence of many lines that hint at potential ideological readings and so-on, or even the play's themes themselves...

-Death
-Aging
-Love
-Honesty
-Blindiness.

All universially relevant, and indeed, the differing positions of the characters allow the responder to emphasise to various positions with age...

Where the sky hits the sea
..Uncle Harry Living End song
..Download it, Listen to it, Like it

Whoa
Uncle Harry pissing in the bath
Whoa, pissing in the bath
Uncle Harry pissing in the bath
Whoa, pissing in the bath again

He lives in a small flat all alone
In the middle of a run down street
Spends most evenings up the pub
Drinking what he earned that week

Harry keeps to himself
Lives a quiet life
No one can remember
When Harry lost his mind

Whoa
Uncle Harry pissing in the bath
Whoa, pissing in the bath
Uncle Harry pissing in the bath
Whoa, pissing in the bath again

Oh Uncle Harry youve done it all again
Youre pissing in the bath every now and then
I caught you in the wrong place
I caught you out of line
I tell you not to do it
But you do it all the time
Do it all the time

Whoa
Uncle Harry pissing in the bath
Whoa, pissing in the bath
Uncle Harry pissing in the bath
Whoa, pissing in the bath again

Poor Uncle Harry lost his mind along the way
Poor Uncle Harry happened twenty years today
Comes around to say hello
Little did we know
Hes up to his old dirty tricks again
Oh Uncle Harry, youve done it all again

Oh Uncle Harry
We really shouldnt laugh
But every time we turn around
Youre pissing in the bath
Its just a silly habit
And we cant help but remind
We tell you not to do it
But you do it all the time

Virtually anything from Oscar Wilde is pretty funny. Or alternatively "smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast".
And he said w3rd, and the w3rd was spoken.

Linkin Park and Evanescence has AWESOME lyrics!!
Memories consume
Like opening the wound
I'm picking me apart again
You all assume
I'm safe here in my room
(Unless i try to start again)
I don't want to be the one
The battles always choose
Cause inside i realize
That i'm the one confused
I don't know what's worth fighting for
Or why i have to scream
I don't know why i instigate
And say what i don't mean
I don't know how i got this way
I know it's not alright
So i'm breaking the habit
I'm breaking the habit
Tonight
Clutching my cure
I tightly lock the door
I try to catch my breath again
I hurt much more
Than anytime before
I had no options left again.....

"Show me the shadow where true meaning lies
So much more is made in empty eyes"
