Well you should look into each institution and do some research, but off the top of my head :
  • UOW, UWS and UTS don't have english/history secondary teaching courses for undergraduates and UWS and UTS don't have undergrad secondary teaching courses at all - and UTS doesnt do history teaching at any level. You'd probably have to do a BA first and then apply for an upgrade with these.
  • Avondale and ACU have strong links to the Catholic School system. They are also smaller class environments.
  • MQ has a strong focus on History in particular ancient egyptian history.

Here's some links for you to chew on - rest you should bbe able to do yourself:

I think for art/education sydney is best place to go. I went to UNSW 'cause science is much better at UNSW than USYD(I was studying BSc/BEd)

my mind is kinda set on sydney or maquarie

wat do u think
It would totally depend on where you lived, which campus you like, where your friends go, and what kind of history you want to do.

I like Macquarie's flexibility and both modern history and ancient history units. Macquarie and USyd have the same amount of first-year history units, but at USyd, I think you'll find doing anything outside your major will be difficult, which sucks.

USyd has a few more modern history (especially 19th - 20th C Europe) history units than Macquarie, whereas Macquarie only has 2 good 20th Century Europe units, which sucks. Then again, I think that period is over-studied and a waste of intellect, but that's just me :p

You need to make up your mind for yourself, however.. and like PwarYuex said, think about all those other things as well (friends, travel time etc) before making a decision

Pwar is doing a B AncHis(Hons)/LLB but would be quite acquainted with the stream you'd need for a Major in History at MQ.

Personally I've done most of the Roman stuff, and I must say the lecturers (Go Tom Hillard) and the units are run quite well, as are most units. I enjoy the variety and expertise and dedication of the division that you can really feel it.

As for the education side, I am looking at doing that straight after my degree, and we have quite a good Education department as well.

Don't go to ACU. That's my only piece of definitive advice. ACU is good for a lot of things, I suppose, but I wouldn't go there if you're looking for depth or range in history.

I'm currently doing the Ancient History degree, which is awesome. Personally, I would look at the Macquarie arts degree as in your first semester, you chose whichever subjects look interesting. There is no immediate choice of major; chosing your major comes when you want to graduate. That way is great, I think, as it doesn't force students to decide on a major too early.

Sydney has got nice history and I know the english there is good, but I'm not sure whether you can do history, english, and education in your first semester (could someone verify?). Not only that, I don't think you can do a double-major in english and history -- from memory, your majors have to intersect (again, could someone verify).

Where do you live? Usyd and Macquarie are quite a distance apart, and depending on where you live, you might find the travel easier... Also, what are of history do you want to look at? If you want ancient, I'd say Macquarie for sure - if you want modern, I'd look at Sydney but remember that Macquarie's 'historical' units spread right across the departments and into areas like anthropology, sociology, media, etc.

Of course I'm biased, but here are the definitives:
1. ACU would not be the way to go for choice and depth,
2. Macquarie is flexible, especially in subject choice, and provides an excellent introductory range (as well as more in-depth major range),
3. USyd probably has a slightly better range of modern history units, but you'll find that you can't do as many introductory units that don't fit into your major.

:)

well im currently doing the barts/ b education (humanities) at Usyd and i just wanna clarify for you about how the course is structured.
at enrollment i asked whether u could major in both english and history because im heading in that direction and i was told that i could but i didnt have to think about that too much in first year so that was a relief. For first year, you pic a subject as a major, a subject as a minor and an extra complimentary subject which you dont continue after first year.

just to verufy wat pwaryuex said, i'm allowed to do a english, history and education in my degree cause its an arts and education major which is what i'm actually doing right nowand the lectures for education are heaps of fun!! As for the breadth of subjects you can do, it not limited to just humanity subjects but you can do others from economics and science etc... However, i have to point out that, because of the structure of the course, you have to pic subjects in the following:
English
Drama
History
Languages (may be taken as a double method)
Visual Arts
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

as your major and minor subjects as they are all teaching subjects. You have to do four teaching subjects from the above areas but you can do 2 subjects out of the four from other faculties like science or economics for example. (this shouldnt be an issue for you since you want to major in history and english).

there's so many history and english subjects from the arts faculty that i, along with alot of other people, had trouble deciding so go here to have a look at the range http://www.usyd.edu.au/handbooks/education_social_work/00_introduction.shtml

history ranges from middle ages to modern european history for first year and you can specialise in tonnes of other things in consecutive years so dont worry.

i also agree with pwaryuex about considering other factors like travel, facilities, extra-curricular stuff and social life ( which i dont think is a problem across any unis)

i really hope that helps.

Most other industries probably would, with the general shortage and high demand for teachers, I doubt it'd be too much of a hinderance though.

Excellent!

Well it seems that USyd is a lot more flexible than I thought.

Well there are your answers, it seems that both have very top-notch facilities. The choice would have to be made on whether you wanted to do Classical (Greece and Rome) studies, or do a bigger collection of things.

USyd has got an awesome Classics department, but that's its limit on ancient history. Macquarie has got a much bigger range (and is the only uni in NSW with a proper Undergrad Egyptology, Hebrew studies, Coptic, Late Antiquity studies, as well as the Greek and Roman studies.

I'd pick MQ for the sole reason it has Tom Hillard!
